Large state-owned groups and projects, four ministries and five provinces and cities will be inspected next year, said the government’s vice chief inspector Mai Quoc Binh.

Binh said the government inspectorate will examine the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin), the Bao Viet Finance-Insurance Group, the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam, the General Department of Reserve, large transportation projects, seaport projects and irrigation projects.

Also under the microscope will be the resettlement of the Yaly and Son La hydro-power projects, the Health Ministry’s management of medicine reserves, and the implementation of the HIV/AIDS prevention project.

Inspectors will additionally scrutinise the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s management of import-export activities, the oil, gas and steel market, the Ministry of Information and Communications’ management of equitisation and communication activities; the Ministry of Science and Technology’s responsibility in management of technology transfer, investment in national laboratories; the Ministry of Education and Training’s construction and development of university, upgrading schools, training of doctors and master degree holders.

Inspectors will check the management of land, natural resources and mineral, construction of urban areas and industrial zones in Bac Ninh, Quang Nam, Binh Thuan, Dak Lak and Can Tho.

Vice chief inspector Mai Quoc Binh said that the upcoming National party congress can consider inspection results as grounds for choosing personnel for the government machinery at all levels.

Vietnam gains a place in International Transparency’s report (IT)

Vietnam has jumped a place to 120^th with 2.7 points in the International Transparency report measuring corruption – one place higher than last year.

Vietnam is in the same group with Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Ethiopia, Bolivia and Armenia. The three countries at the bottom of the list are Myanmar, Afghanistan and Somalia.

The five countries with the least corruption are New Zealand, Denmark, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland, with 9-10/10 points.
