Vietnam protests Chinaâs violation of Hoang Sa territory
Published: 17/11/2009 05:00
| China has violated Vietnamâs territory in setting up local administrations on two islands on the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Archipelago, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokeswoman Nguyen Phuong Nga said on Monday. |
| Vietnam has all historical evidence and legal grounds to confirm its sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagoes, Nga said. The spokeswoman made the statement following a decision taken by Chinaâs Hainan Province to establish hamlet committees on the Phu Lam and Cay islands on November 8. China calls these islands Yongxing and Zhashu. âVietnam protests the Chinese decision. This has critically violated territories under Vietnamâs sovereignty,â Nga said. The action is not in keeping with the âshared awareness of the two countriesâ high-ranking leaders, and not good for the two partiesâ negotiation process on basic and long-lasting solutions to sea matters,â she added. Vietnam wants to deal with disputes through nonviolent means and negotiations in accordance with international laws, especially the United Nationsâ convention on the Law of Sea 1982 and the 2002 Declaration on the Code of Conduct of Parties in the East Sea, Nga said.
