In early December, the State Auditing Agency of Vietnam announced that average monthly salary of SCIC’s officials is 78 million dong. The SCIC immediately claimed innocence.

On December 28, in a meeting with the Central Steering Board for Fighting Corruption, Deputy Minister of Public Security Le The Tiem said that this information must be clarified. “Is it true? While workers and farmers work hard but earn very low but the salary of those people is so high. The people are very confused,” he maintained.

Speaking to the media on December 29, the chief government inspector Tran Van Truyen said that specialized inspectors need to investigate immediately.

Truyen said that in 2009, ministries and agencies conducted 1800 inspections, detecting violations worth over 11.11 trillion dong. Nearly 90 organisations and 70 individuals were punished. 11 cases were handed over to police.

Vice-Chief Government Inspector Mai Quoc Binh said that 150 corruption cases were detected this year, with over 430 officials punished with a total of assets worth over 74 billion dong. Nearly 70 cases and 90 people were handed over to police for further investigation.

Yen Bai has the highest number of corruption cases among 63 provinces and cities, with 16 cases, totaling over 1 trillion dong and 62 related officials. Binh Thuan ranks second with 10 cases, 17 officials and over 1.8 trillion dong, 31sq.m of land.

Related to equitisation at state-owned enterprises, of nearly 190 enterprises inspected, over 170 committed violations related to assets worth over 3.7 trillion dong.
