Viet Nam is worried about the seizure of Vietnamese fishermen and their boats by the Chinese sides, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Nguyen Phuong Nga yesterday.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Nguyen Phuong Nga.

On December 7 and 8, 43 fishermen from Quang Ngai Province were conducting normal activities on their boats at the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Archipelago within Viet Nam’s territorial waters when the Chinese side held them, seized two of their three boats together with their equipment, belongings and catches, then put all of them into the third boat and let them go.

Responding to questions by reporters about the incident, Nga said such acts were a gross violation of Viet Nam’s sovereignty and sovereign rights.

“The acts run counter to the friendship between the two nations and is detrimental to the lives and property of Vietnamese fishermen,” she said.

Nga said the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry yesterday delivered a note to the Chinese Embassy in Ha Noi demanding that China return the remaining two boats, equipment and all belongings to their owners.

Viet Nam also asked China to take immediate measures to stop such acts being repeated in the future.
