ASEAN consults Vietnam on Thailand’s woes

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nguyen Phuong Nga on May 20 confirmed that Vietnam, as ASEAN Chair, has consulted with other ASEAN member states about the situation in Thailand.
In his reply to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and to government chiefs of other ASEAN countries on May 18, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung advanced the hope that Thailand can overcome current challenges peacefully through dialogue. He agreed that ASEAN countries need to take action together and to have a common voice to express their concern and their sympathy to Thailand in this difficult moment.
On May 19, Deputy Prime Minister cum Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem also sent a letter to his Thai counterpart, Kasit Piromva, as well as other ASEAN Foreign Ministers and the ASEAN Secretary General, to express his concern over the violence in Thailand and expect related sides to restrain themselves to seek suitable solutions through peaceful dialogues.
“Vietnam has closely followed the complicated situation in Thailand and hopes related sides to deal with the tensions through peaceful negotiations and avoid violence to stabilize the situation in Thailand quickly in the interests of the Thai people and contribute to peace and stability in the region,” Nga concluded.
