NA Chairman meets voters in Ba Dinh district

On May 3, a National Assembly (NA) delegation led by Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong met voters in Ba Dinh district to inform them of the content of the 7th session of the 12th NA and collect their opinions.

The seventh session of the 12th NA legislature is scheduled to open on May 20 for more than one month, during which the NA deputies will discuss and finalise many important issues related to legislature and supervision.

Voters praised the NA’s efforts to renew its operations and enhance its role in boosting national development. They expressed their wish that the NA will continue to strictly control issues such as corruption, superstition, ineffective capital construction investment and rising prices.

NA Chairman Trong acknowledged voters’ opinions which will be submitted to the NA in the upcoming session and confirmed that the NA would perform its supervisory role in a more effective and practical manner.

April 30 Victory celebrated abroad

A series of get-togethers have been held by Vietnamese embassies worldwide to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the April 30 Victory.

A meeting was held in Tokyo to mark the 35th anniversary of the liberation of South Vietnam.

Minister-Counsellor at the Vietnamese Embassy Nguyen Minh Ha recalled important events in the struggle for national liberation of the Vietnamese people and reviewed achievements recorded in Vietnam’s Doi moi (renewal) process.

At the meeting in Bangkok, Vietnamese Ambassador to Thailand Ngo Quang Thang described the April 30 victory under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam and Uncle Ho as a milestone in the cause of national construction and defence of the Vietnamese people.

He called on all Vietnamese people who work, study and live in Thailand, to make contributions to the country’s development.

Russia welcomes VN’s participation in anti nuclear terrorism initiative

Russia welcomes Vietnam’s participation in the global initiative to combat nuclear terrorism, said the Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement on April 30.

The statement said that Vietnam has officially informed the US and Russia of its support for the initiative, which was launched within the framework of the G8 Summit in Saint Petersburg in July 2008.

Russia welcomes Vietnam’s decision and hoped that Vietnam will make considerable contributions to implementing the initiative, said the statement.

Russia is also hopeful that other countries will join the initiative in the spirit of approving the initiative’s common target and is faithful to the fight against nuclear terrorism.

Cuban newspaper praises Vietnam’s struggle for national independence

On April 30, Granma newspaper, an official organ of the Communist Party of Cuba ran an article praising Vietnam’s combative spirit against US invaders to liberate southern Vietnam and unify the nation.

Entitled “Vietnam, Epic of Yesterday and Today”, the article by Cuba’s well-known female journalist, Marta Rojas, recalled the glorious moments of the Vietnamese people and army on April 30, 1975.

The article said that Vietnam’s indomitable heroism was not only demonstrated in the war but also during peace time and has created a shining example of the great development in a united Vietnam.

Marta Rojas was a reporter in Vietnam during the resistance against the US and is currently the Vice Chairwoman of the Cuba- Vietnam Friendship Association. She was also the last foreign reporter to interview President Ho Chi Minh before he passed away.

Southern liberation anniversary in Japan’s media spotlight

The 35th anniversary of the liberation of south Vietnam was covered by Japanese media while Japan’s NHK television said that the celebration highlighted the correct and clear-sighted leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) in economic development.

On April 30, NHK Television reported the 35th anniversary of Southern Liberation in Ho Chi Minh City attended by State President Nguyen Minh Triet, other Party and State leaders and 50,000 HCM City residents. NHK TV channel covered the Secretary of the HCM City Party Organisation, Le Thanh Hai, reviewing the achievements recorded by the people under the CPV leadership during the Doi Moi (Renewal) process.

NHK quoted Mr Hai as saying with an average economic growth rate of 10.5 percent/year, HCM City has become the engine of Vietnam’s economic development.

Vietnam, China co-operation gets new driving force

The visit by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to Shanghai city and Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces which ended on May 1 has created co-operation opportunities for enterprises of both countries, promoting Vietnam’s image and calling for investment into Vietnam.

PM Dung’s meeting with Chinese Party General Secretary and State President Hu Jintao reiterated that as two close neighbours, the ever-growing friendship between the two countries over the last 60 years is in compliance with two people’s interest and aspirations.

The two sides agreed they should continue to apply practical measures to further boost bilateral co-operation, under which, Vietnam and China will maintain and increase high-ranking visits and meeting as well as expanding exchanges between ministries, branches and localities of both countries.

They also agreed to boost the efficiency of cooperation in all fields and maintain the pace of trade growth, striving to obtain a two-way trade turnover of US$ 25 billion this year.

The Vietnamese PM visit to one of China’s largest economic zones has also helped create co-operation opportunities for businesses of both sides, resulting in the signing of investment, trade and tourism deals were between Vietnam and these localities.

Before leaving Shanghai for Vietnam, PM Dung visited Shanghai R&D centre of Zhongxing group, telecom equipment provider and Shanghai Electric Corporation.
