President Nguyen Minh Triet officially appointed Deputy Minister Pham Vu Luan as the Minister of Education and Training on June 30.

Luan was born in 1955 and is a professor and doctor of economics. He was the director of the University of Trade from 1999 to 2004. He was appointed as Deputy Minister of Education and Training in June 2004. He became permanent Deputy Minister in December 2009.

Since April 2010, he has temporarily replaced former Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan.

Luan will be responsible for school material facilities, higher education, vocational training, training up to social demands, international cooperation and training, IT application in education, educational statistics, equitisation and personnel.

He manages the following agencies: Higher Education Department, Specialised Education Department, School Material Facilities Deaprtment, International Cooperation Department, External Training Department, IT Department, Institute for Educational Sciences of Vietnam, Institute for School Research and Design, Educational Equipment JS Company 1, SEAMEO Regional Training Centre, Training Assistance and Human Resource Supply Centre.

Luan is also responsible for managing many educational projects and will participate in the Government’s steering boards.
