An online meeting between the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese and Vietnamese in Laos and France was held on July 13, chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Thanh Son.
Son, who is also State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Chairman, called overseas Vietnamese in Vientiane and Paris to join the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.
He reminded the participants that the anniversary was just one of 63 anniversaries the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural organization, UNESCO, had chosen to associate with during 2010 and 2011.
“We should grasp this once-in-a-millennium opportunity to hold a grand ceremony to popularize the nation’s image to the world,” Son said.
The State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese and Dat Viet newspaper will sponsor the gathering as part of a cultural week in anticipation of the anniversary from July 27 to August 2.
Son also called for young Vietnamese throughout the world to join the Summer Camp 2010 that will be held in 10 provinces in three regions from July 15 to August 4.
“By attending the camp, we hope the new generation of overseas Vietnamese will return to their origins, witness the changes of their homeland and develop a deeper understanding of Vietnamese history and culture,” he said.
A requiem in honor of the soldiers who fell in the war against the Khmer Rouge will be held in the southern province of Tay Ninh from July 15-17.
The last program will be a video conference linking Hanoi-Vientiane-Paris from 8-10pm, July 31.
