Party Secretary General Nong Duc Manh participated in and delivered an important speech at the opening session of the HCM City Party Congress on the morning of October 5.

The congress will take place from October 5 to 8, with the participation of 449 delegates, 49 more than the previous congress, who are representative for over 154,000 Party members in the city. Among them are 387 people who are selected from grassroots party cells, 82 female delegates and 35 doctor degree holders.

The congress, taking place from October 5 to 8, will review the implementation of the previous congress’ resolutions and determine directions and missions for the city development in the term 2010-2015; make comments to the 11th National Party Congress, elect the new steering board (up to 69 members) for the next term and choose delegates for the upcoming 11th National Party Congress.

Measures to obtain the city’s targets in the next five years would also be discussed at the event.

According to the city Party committee, the city authorities and people has overcome plenty of difficulties and challenges to restrain inflation and economic downturn as well as to attain important achievements in the last term, 2005-2010.

Of the missions in the next five years, the city will focus on reducing traffic gridlock and street flooding, reducing environmental pollution and improving the human resource quality as well as strengthening administrative innovation and the economic structure transfer.

On the sideline of the congress, a delegation of the city top leaders and the congress’ delegates, led by Le Thanh Hai, Politburo member and the city Party committee secretary, visited and burnt incense to commemorate heroes at the city Martyrs’ Cemetery on Monday morning.
