Congratulations to Cambodia Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh and State President Nguyen Minh Triet yesterday, Nov 9, sent a basket of flowers and a message of congratulations to Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni on the country’s 57th National Day. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung also sent congratulations to his counterpart, Hun Sen and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong sent similar messages to the President of the Senate, Chea Sim, and the President of the National Assembly, Heng Samrin. Vietnam, Netherlands cooperate in coping with climate change and sea level rise Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung held a reception in Hanoi on November 9 for the Netherlands’ former Minister of Agriculture, Professor Veer Man, who has just become an advisor to the government of Vietnam on implementing the national target programme to cope with climate change and sea level rise. Vietnam is one of the five nations which is expected to hardest hit by climate change and rising sea levels. The Vietnamese government considers a major challenge for sustainable development and approved a national target programme to cope with the issues. To fulfill the goals, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung asked Professor Veer Man to co-ordinate with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and relevant agencies to map out a detailed plan for a strategic agreement between the two countries on coping with climate change and managing water resources. Professor Veer Man proposed that the strategic agreement should focus on the Mekong River Delta where climate change and sea level rise can be clearly seen so that Vietnam can draw practical experiences to apply in other areas. PM Dung also agreed with Professor Veer Man’s proposal and asked him to draw up a detailed plan soon to direct a group of experts in carrying out the plan to cope with climate change and sea level rise in the Mekong River Delta. Myanmar vote lauded Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem, as chair of ASEAN, applauded Myanmar’s general election held on Sunday. In a statement issued on Monday, Khiem said “ASEAN welcomes the general election held on November 7 in Myanmar as a significant step forward in the implementation of the seven-point Roadmap for Democracy. ASEAN is encouraging Myanmar to continue to accelerate the process of national reconciliation and democratisation, for stability and development.” He also stressed the need for Myanmar to continue to work with ASEAN and the UN and said that ASEAN stands ready to assist Myanmar if required, in accordance with the ASEAN Charter. State President stresses importance of national unity bloc The maintainance of national unity bloc would help the country overcome all difficulties, said State President Nguyen Minh Triet. President Triet made the statement while he attended the national unity festive day in Tao Phu village, Tam Hong commune, Yen Lac district, in the northern midland province of Vinh Phuc on November 9. Mr. Triet expressed his pleasure at the development of Tao Phu village, which contributes to the development of Tam Hong commune, Yen Lac district, the province and the country as a whole. The State President attributed the village’s development to timeless efforts by local authorities and people in the spirit of mutual assistance. Upholding its tradition of national unity, Vietnam has won independence and made great achievements in national construction, he said. On the occasion of the 80th founding anniversary of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (Nov. 18), President Triet applauded the mass organisations actively engaging in the two movements: “All Unite for Building a Cultural Lifestyle in Residential Quarters” and “Day for the Poor”. Tao Phu has been recognised as a cultured village for many years. Farming has generated an income of VND65 million per ha, increasing annual per capita income to VND23 million. Education and healthcare services for local people have been improved and all roads in the village have been concreted. Over the last decade, villagers have donated VND100 million to funds for the poor, flood victims and Agent Orange victims. Ninh Thuan asked to help war prison inmates President Nguyen Minh Triet emphasised that the south central province of Ninh Thuan should take appropriate measures to improve the lives of ex-prisoners who were detained in imperialist regime’s cells. The State President made the request while receiving 46 former soldiers representing 860 members of the Ninh Thuan Patriotic Prisoners Association in Hanoi on November 9. President Triet expressed his admiration for the undaunted spirit of Ninh Thuan’s former prisoners and nationwide revolutionary soldiers in the country’s anti-imperialist war as well as his sympathy for their hardship and losses that they had to suffer. Revolutionary soldiers who were detained at these cells have shown their iron-clad will, patriotism and faithfulness to the Party and the nation during the hard struggles, said the President. Ninh Thuan remains a poor province, said President Triet, saying that the Central government has chosen Ninh Thuan as a destination for the construction of two nuclear power plants.
