Vietnam is one of the five nations
which is expected to hardest hit by climate change and rising sea levels. The
Vietnamese government considers a major challenge for sustainable development
and approved a national target programme to cope with the issues.

To fulfill the goals, Prime Minister
Nguyen Tan Dung asked Professor Veer Man to co-ordinate with the Ministry of
Natural Resources and Environment and relevant agencies to map out a detailed
plan for a strategic agreement between the two countries on coping with climate
change and managing water resources.

Professor Veer Man proposed that the
strategic agreement should focus on the Mekong River Delta where climate change
and sea level rise can be clearly seen so that Vietnam can draw practical
experiences to apply in other areas.

PM Dung also agreed with Professor
Veer Man’s proposal and asked him to draw up a detailed plan soon to direct a
group of experts in carrying out the plan to cope with climate change and sea
level rise in the Mekong River Delta.

Myanmar vote lauded

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister
Pham Gia Khiem, as chair of ASEAN, applauded Myanmar’s general election held on
Sunday.

In a statement issued on Monday, Khiem said
“ASEAN welcomes the general election held on November 7 in Myanmar as a
significant step forward in the implementation of the seven-point Roadmap for
Democracy. ASEAN is encouraging Myanmar to continue to accelerate the process of
national reconciliation and democratisation, for stability and development.”

He also stressed the need for Myanmar to
continue to work with ASEAN and the UN and said that ASEAN stands ready to
assist Myanmar if required, in accordance with the ASEAN Charter.

State President stresses importance of national
unity bloc

The maintainance of national unity bloc would help
the country overcome all difficulties, said State President Nguyen Minh Triet.

President Triet made the statement
while he attended the national unity festive day in Tao Phu village, Tam Hong
commune, Yen Lac district, in the northern midland province of Vinh Phuc on
November 9.

Mr. Triet expressed his pleasure at
the development of Tao Phu village, which contributes to the development of Tam
Hong commune, Yen Lac district, the province and the country as a whole.

The State President attributed the
village’s development to timeless efforts by local authorities and people in the
spirit of mutual assistance.
Upholding its tradition of national unity, Vietnam has won independence and made
great achievements in national construction, he said.
On the occasion of the 80th founding anniversary of the Vietnam
Fatherland Front (Nov. 18), President Triet applauded the mass organisations
actively engaging in the two movements: “All Unite for Building a Cultural
Lifestyle in Residential Quarters” and “Day for the Poor”.
Tao Phu has been recognised as a cultured village for many years.
Farming has generated an income of VND65 million per ha, increasing annual per
capita income to VND23 million. Education and healthcare services for local
people have been improved and all roads in the village have been concreted.
Over the last decade, villagers have donated VND100 million to funds for the
poor, flood victims and Agent Orange victims.

Ninh Thuan asked to help war prison inmates

President Nguyen Minh Triet emphasised that the
south central province of Ninh Thuan should take appropriate measures to improve
the lives of ex-prisoners who were detained in imperialist regime’s cells.

The State President made the request while receiving
46 former soldiers representing 860 members of the Ninh Thuan Patriotic
Prisoners Association in Hanoi on November 9.
President Triet expressed his admiration for the undaunted spirit of Ninh
Thuan’s former prisoners and nationwide revolutionary soldiers in the country’s
anti-imperialist war as well as his sympathy for their hardship and losses that
they had to suffer.
Revolutionary soldiers who were detained at these cells have shown their
iron-clad will, patriotism and faithfulness to the Party and the nation during
the hard struggles, said the President.
Ninh Thuan remains a poor province, said President Triet, saying that the
Central government has chosen Ninh Thuan as a destination for the construction
of two nuclear power plants.
This is a big investment policy to facilitate the province’s comprehensive
development in the future to help it catch up with other localities, he said.
