US Army General visits Vietnam

Chief of
Staff of the US Army Gen. George William Casey Jr., who is on a working visit to
Vietnam, was warmly received by Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Quoc Khanh, the Deputy Chief
of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army at the headquarters of the
Defense Ministry, on Nov. 22.

At the reception, Lieut. Gen. Khanh expressed his hope that the visit would help
strengthen the relations and mutual understanding between the two countries’
armies and people.

For his part, Gen. George William Casey Jr. thanked Lieut. Gen Khanh for warm
reception and expressed his pleasure over his visit to Vietnam to understand
more about Vietnam ’s history as well as its army and people.

Both agreed to further boost military personnel exchange as well as cooperation
on military activities including military medicine and bomb and mine sweeping.

Ha Giang urged to care for human resources

Truong Tan Sang, Politburo member and permanent
member of the Party Central Committee Secretariat, has urged the Ha Giang
administration to focus on young generation in its personnel plan.

Mr Sang held a working session with provincial
leaders on the second day of his two-day visit to the northern mountainous
province on November 21, telling them to care for human resource development,
focus on young generation and send more officials to grassroots administrations.

He called on the local administration and ethnic groups to “work harder, more
creative and more effectively” in economic development.

“Ha Giang should shift its crop structure to the commercial scale, increase crop
productivity and improve farm produce quality,” the senior Party official said.

He said the province should make a greater effort to attract and efficiently
manage investment, especially in socio-economic infrastructure projects.

On November 20, Mr Sang attended the inauguration of Na Lan bridge in Xin Man
district. He also visited and presented gifts to teachers and students at the
boarding school for ethnic children in Hoang Su Phi district on Vietnam
Teachers’ Day.

Meeting marks 70th anniversary of Nam Ky Uprising

The Nam Ky Uprising laid the premises for the
success of the August Revolution 1945, opening new era for the nation.

A meeting for the 70^th anniversary of
the Nam Ky Uprising took place at the Nga Ba Giong Memorial Relics in Hoc Mon
district, Ho Chi Minh City on November 22.

Present at the meeting were State President
Nguyen Minh Triet, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong, former Prime
Minister Phan Van Khai, former Vice President Truong My Hoa, senior war
veterans, Vietnamese heroic mothers, heroes of the people’s armed forces and
martyrs’ relatives.

At the meeting, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City
Party Committee, Le Thanh Hai recalled the Nam Ky Uprising, which broke out in
early November 23, 1940 in 18 hamlets in Hoc Mon district and then spread widely
to many provinces. Several days afterwards, the uprising was crushed and many
Party leaders were captured and killed, including Nguyen Van Cu, Vo Van Tan,
Phan Dang Luu, Ha Huy Tap and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai. However, the failure became
an example that began following movements.

Mr Hai said that inheriting the tradition of the
uprising, the municipal Party Committee and people have implemented many proper
measures to develop the city, mobilise all available sources to further promote
socio-economic development, and contribute to the national process of
industrialization and modernization.
