| Oman embassy holds National Day reception The Sultanate of Oman celebrated its 40th National Day yesterday, Nov 22, at a reception hosted by Oman’s embassy in Ha Noi. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Doan Xuan Hung attended the event and congratulated the country on the anniversary’s occasion. Oman’s National Day falls on November 18 to mark the day His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said acceded to the throne in 1970. Viet Nam and Oman established diplomatic relations on June 9, 1992. Since then the two countries have held several high-level meetings and two-way trade turnover has increased dramatically from US$1.2 million in 2002 to $9 million in 2007. 7th session of Vietnam-Myanmar Joint Committee wraps up The 7th session of the Vietnam-Myanmar Joint Committee (VMJC) wrapped up in Hanoi on Nov. 23 with after three days of sitting. During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the implementation of high-level agreements as well as those that were inked at the VMJC’s 6th session in 2008. They also compared notes on issues of mutual concern ranging from economics, trade, investment, agriculture, forestry, education, science and technology to posts and telecommunications, tourism, culture and sports. According to Nguyen Thi Xuan Thu, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, the fine outcomes of the meeting would further contribute to boosting the two countries’ cooperative relations. Vietnam and Myanmar will continue negotiating in order to have more signed documents regarding areas such as visa exemption, tourism, customs, telecommunications, national defence and security, breeding, rubber and forestry. Meanwhile, Myanmar Deputy Foreign Minister U Maung Myint, underlined he need for the two countries to further step up cooperation, especially in the fields of economics, trade and investment as, he said, potentials and prospects for the two nations’ cooperation still remains huge. “I hope that we will meet each other again in the next session in Nay Pyi Taw with much progress and outcomes in the implementation of the agreements that have been reached at this meeting,” Deputy Minister Thu said. At the end of the meeting, a minutes was signed by the two countries’ deputy ministers. US young congressmen explore HCM City A delegation of the American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL) Council have expressed their keen interest in metro, belt road, monorail and other traffic infrastructure development projects in Ho Chi Minh City. At a reception in HCM City on Nov. 22, Permanent Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, Nguyen Thanh Tai, briefed the young US congressmen from Tennessee, Minnesota, Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, Washington D.C and Maine States of the city’s socio-economic development. The delegation’s visit to Hanoi, Hue city and HCM City has helped them better understand about Vietnam ’s country, people and culture, they said. State Vice President welcomes Lao students State Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan on November 22 received a delegation of 19 former Lao students who had studied and undertaken research in Vietnam. The Vice State President applauded the visit, which took place on the occasion of Vietnam Teachers’ Day (November 20), saying that it revealed the former Lao students’ deep sentiments towards their Vietnamese teachers. Mrs. Doan thanked the Lao Party, State and people for their valuable support for Vietnam during the struggle for national independence in the past as well as the current national construction and defence. She said she was pleased with the fact that the former Lao students are now holding important positions in various fields in their country. The former Lao students’ successes are significant gifts for Vietnamese teachers, she said, adding that they also act as a bridge for strengthening the Vietnam-Lao special friendship and comprehensive cooperation. On behalf of the former students, Somkot Mangnomek, Party Committee Secretary and Mayor of Xieng Khouang Province, expressed thanks to the Vietnamese Party, State and people for training thousands of Lao students, a remarkable human resource for the development of the Lao country. The former Lao students said they were moved to return to Vietnam, which is considered their second homeland, by their unforgettable memories of Vietnamese teachers and friends. They affirmed that whatever positions they hold, they would always look towards Vietnam, wherever they had lived and studied, and would try their best to foster the special friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and Laos. On the occasion, State Vice President Doan presented the Friendship Order offered by State President Nguyen Minh Triet to Somkot Mangnomek for his important contributions to consolidating and developing Vietnam-Laos ties.
