Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has proposed initiatives to deal with economic and global development issues, helping to build G20 institutions and global governance mechanisms, in line with the interests of the newly emerging and developing economies.

PM Dung and G20 leaders attended the G20 summit’s plenary sessions in Seoul on November 12.

At the plenary session on the theme “Shared Growth beyond the Crisis”, PM Dung, G20 leaders and representatives from international organisations focused their discussions on the world economy, the framework for strong, sustainable and balanced growth, reforms of international institutions and financial regulations, the global financial system, climate change, and green growth.

Addressing the session on the world economy and the framework for strong, sustainable and balanced growth, Mr Dung praised the coordination mechanism of policies at regional and global levels at the helm of the G20 as a major factor in helping the world economy bounce back rapidly.

The Vietnamese government leader asked the G20 to build a pilot policy consultation mechanism with some regional organisations, including ASEAN with a view to exchanging views and information about regional and global economic and financial issues and adopting the group’s important policies.

Mr Dung praised G20 members, particularly the host country for bringing development issues into the G20 Seoul Summit’s agenda and asked the G20 to continue to support developing and middle-income countries.

PM Dung proposed establishing a G20 knowledge sharing network with the participation of G20 and non-G20 member countries while affirming that ASEAN as well as Vietnam are ready to cooperate with G20 countries in implementing the development agenda.

Regarding climate change and green growth, Mr Dung called on the G20 to make a greater effort to reach a new international legal agreemen t on coping with global climate change after 2012, at the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol in Cancun, Mexico, in late November 2010.

He proposed two initiatives to set up a special foundation to assist countries greatly affected by climate change and hold a forum of coastal countries facing climate change to share experiences in protecting the marine ecological environment.

Seoul Action Programme adopted

The G20 Seoul Summit reached a consensus on various key issues, including the approval of the Seoul Action Programme to implement the framework for strong, sustainable and balanced growth.

The summit reaffirmed the G20’s commitments to end the Doha Round Talks soon and prevent trade remedy measures, adopted new regulations on financial reform to control risks of the financial system and agreed upon measures to reform the International Monetary Fund (IMF) by promoting the voting rights of developing countries.

Korea’s initiative on the establishment of a global financial security network received support from many countries and will be considered for implementation at the G20 Summit scheduled to take place in France next year.

Later in the day, PM Dung and his delegation left Seoul for Hanoi, successfully concluding their attendance at the G20 Seoul Summit.

PM Dung’s activities at the summit one again highlighted the role, status and prestige of ASEAN as well as Vietnam in the international community, as a contribution to promoting the friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and G20 members.
