Vietnam holds 2nd workshop on East Sea

Nearly 70 international scholars arrived in HCM City on November 10 to attend an international workshop on the East Sea from November 11-12.

The workshop entitled “East Sea: Cooperation for Security and Development in the Region” attracts scholars from member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), China, Australia, Canada, India, Japan, South Korea, the USA and some European countries.

 

Scholars will assess the significance of the East Sea in the region, review the recent happenings in the East Sea and their impact on security and development in the region and promote cooperation in the East Sea for peace and prosperity.

 

They will consider international laws related to the East Sea conflict, artificial islands and their influence on conflicts in the East Sea as well as seek legal solutions for China’s U-shaped border in the East Sea.

 

China’s amendment of its statement to view the East Sea as its core interest and the greater involvement in the region will be also discussed.

 

The workshop will consider the role of the East Sea in cooperation in East Asia and will of particular significance because the East Asia Summit has been extended with the participation of the US and Russia.  Topics of interest include the impacts of recent tensions on regional security and prosperity, the influence of reports on the continental shelf on statements of sovereignty in the East Sea, the building of trust and promoting cooperation, and the development of the Code of Conducts in the East Sea.

 

This is the second international workshop on the East Sea held in Vietnam by the Institute for International Relations and the Vietnam Bar Association.

 

The first workshop was organized last year in Hanoi with the participation of over 50 Vietnamese and international scholars.
