President sends condolences to Russian, Brazilian leaders President Nguyen Minh Triet yesterday, Jan 25, sent a message of condolences to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev over the suicide bombing at Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport on Monday which killed 35 people and injured 170 others. Triet on the same day sent a message of condolences to Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff over the property and human loss caused by flooding. Regarding the suicide bombing, Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Nguyen Phuong Nga said that Viet Nam strongly denounced the suicide attack. “We strongly condemn this outrageous act,” she said. Local connection A Russian returning from Viet Nam was slightly injured in the suicide bombing after getting off a Vietnam Airlines flight, the national flag carrier said. The passenger was injured in the leg after disembarking the VN527 flight from HCM City to Moscow and entering the arrival terminal of Domodedovo, Moscow’s busiest airport, a VNA spokesman said. The passenger, whose identity remains unknown, was rushed to the hospital for treatment. The return Moscow-HCM City 526 flight with 105 passengers on board was delayed 28 minutes and left 7.35pm local time. The flight was scheduled to land at 9.30am yesterday, Jan 25. Viet Nam Airlines said as soon as the bombing happened, the airline responded with airport authorities and security agencies in both countries to ensure the safety of passengers and provide assistance where necessary. The flooding disaster killed at least 759 and left about 400 others still missing, making it the deadliest natural catastrophe in Brazil’s history. Book published on China, Viet Nam land border The book Viet Nam and China’s Land Border hit bookstores yesterday, marking the first time that a comprehensive and detailed book about the Viet Nam-China land border has been published. | Photo: Vietnam+ | Professor Vu Duong Ninh was the chief editor of the project. The book has five chapters, which briefly describe Viet Nam’s historical mission to define and defend its borders over the centuries. The work reflects the Vietnamese Communist Party and State’s policies and guidelines toward solving land border issues between Viet Nam and China in order to protect the nation’s territorial integrity. The book also provides readers with basic information about border negotiations between the two countries that led to the signing of the Viet Nam-China Land Border Treaty on March 31, 1999 and the construction of the last land border marker on December 31, 2008. It also provides a detailed description about the Viet Nam-China Land Border Treaty, related regulations and Viet Nam’s National Border Law. The book project kicked off in November 2009 and was approved by an appraisal council headed by Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Do Quy Doan on December 7, 2010. Viet Nam, UAE ink visa waiver pact Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved an agreement between the governments of Viet Nam and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to waive visas for diplomatic, official or special passport holders from the two countries. The UAE has invested in Viet Nam in a number of fields, such as infrastructure construction, services, renewable energy, port and airport construction and human resources development co-operation. There are more than 20,000 Vietnamese labourers working in the UAE at present. Party, State leaders pay Tet visits to intellectuals To Huy Rua, Politburo member and Head of the Central Commission for Communication and Education, visited and extended Tet (Lunar New Year) wishes to some prominent intellectuals in Hanoi on January 25. Mr Rua visited Professor-Dr Dao Tien Khoa, who is Director of the Fundamental Research and Calculating Centre under the Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology, and former veteran journalist Do Phuong, who was the former CPV Central Committee member and Director General of the Vietnam News Agency. On behalf of the Party and State, To Huy Rua highlighted Dr Khoa’s contributions to the country’s science and technology and Mr Phuong’s contributions to the Vietnamese revolutionary press. The scientist and journalist said they were moved by the Party and State’s special attention and affirmed that they will continue to contribute more to the country’s construction and development. * The same day, a delegation of the Vietnamese Communist Party Central Committee visited the party committee, people and armed forces of Dien Bien province. The head of the delegation, General Ngo Xuan Lich, who is also Secretary of the Central Committee, conveyed General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s Lunar New Year regards to them. General Secretary Trong wished that the northwestern Dien Bien province will gain more successes in its socio-economic development. On the occasion, General Lich visited and presented gifts to officers and soldiers at the Dien Bien Military Command and Border Guard Command. Defence Minister visits disadvantaged people The Minister of National Defence General Phung Quang Thanh visited the Friendship Village in Hanoi , run by the Vietnam War Veterans Association (VWVA) on January 25 on the threshold of the Lunar New Year festival (Tet). Thanh presented gifts to children, war veterans and Agent Orange victims to enjoy Tet celebrations. He also spoke highly of the achievements recorded by the village’s staff and expressed his hope that they would continue to enhance their qualifications and accomplish their work at the Friendship Village. On the same day, Thanh paid a visit to the VWVA Central Committee. Meeting marks CPV’s 81st anniversary A meeting was held in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang on January 25 to celebrate 81st anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and welcome the Lunar New Year festival. Tran The Ngoc, Secretary of the Tien Giang Provincial Party Committee delivered a report to recall the glorious history of the CPV which is the vanguard of the working class which is loyal to the interests of the working people and the whole nation. He emphasized that the provincial party committee and local people have made important contribution to the cause of national liberation, especially to the Doi Moi (Renewal) process. The province has become part of the southern key economic region with its economic growth rate reaching 11 percent in the 2005-2010 period, its average annual income per capita rising to more than VND19 million per year and its poverty rate declining by 7 percent. He called for co-ordinated efforts to uphold the glorious tradition of the Party and follow the late President Ho Chi Minh’s bright moral example, while trying to build a transparent political system and a strong party committee and fulfill plans for 2011.
