Meeting marks victory in US war

A meeting was held in Tien Giang province on January
2 to mark the 48th anniversary of Ap Bac victory, which was the first major
victory by the Vietnamese revolutionary army against US-backed Saigon armed
forces.

Nguyen Van Khang, Chairman of the Tien Giang
provincial People’s Committee, recalled the battle of Ap Bac, which took place
in a small hamlet named Ap Bac near the Plain of Reeds, a stronghold of the
national revolution, on January 2, 1963. It defeated an attack by 2,000 enemy
troops, equipped with armoured vehicles, artillery and American helicopters.

The victory led to the bankruptcy of the enemy’s
tactic of helicopter and armour transportation and stirred up a movement “To
follow Ap Bac in killing enemy troops” across southern Vietnam.

The 261^st Battalion, which played a
key role in the victory, was presented a flag embroidered with the line “Giron
Battalion” by the Cuban Government. One year after the victory, the battalion
was renamed as Giron after a glorious victory of the Cuban revolution.

The Cuban General Consul in Ho Chi Minh City,
Gabriel Perez Tarrau, expressed his impression of a great change for the better
in the former battlefield of Ap Bac after 35 years of liberation and the
successful renewal of Vietnam as a whole.

He emphasised the coincidence on the date of the
Ap Bac victory and the Cuban National Day which was declared 52 years ago.

The meeting was also held to mark the 50^th
anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two
countries, both of which are preparing to hold their Party Congresses this year.

The Cuban diplomat and his entourage also paid a
tribute to three soldiers killed in the battle of Ap Bac at their tombs.

NA inaugurates commemorative house in Tuyen Quang

A commemorative house of the National Assembly’s
Standing Committee was inaugurated in Son Duong district, the northern
mountainous province of Tuyen Quang on Jan. 2.

Addressing the function, Deputy NA Chairwoman and
Secretary of the Party Central Committee Tong Thi Phong stressed that Tuyen
Quang was a strong and safe base of the revolutionary government during the
resistance war against French colonialists. It was in the province that the NA
standing committee worked together with the Government to implement the Party’s
political policy, and instruct the entire people in the resistance war.

NA’s Standing Committee was based in Son Duong
district’s Trung Yen commune between 1952-1954.

Complete works of Party documents published on
CD-ROM

Work on the electronic version of the Complete works
of Party documents is being carried out by the National Political Publishing
House –Truth.

The set of two CD-ROMs contain all documents of the
54-volume printed version, along with more than 30 selected songs praising the
Communist Party and Vietnam.

In addition, the e-version book provides useful, easy search tools in different
categories of index, topics, key word, type of documents, agency of issuance and
year of issuance.

The Complete work of Party documents includes documents on precursor
organisations of the Party, the Party establishment conference and congresses,
Central Committee meetings, resolutions, decrees, decisions, announcements made
by the Central Committees, Political Bureaus, zone Party committees, military
zone Party committees in periods.

Vietnam to set up National Centre for Judicial
Records

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a
project to set up the National Centre for Judicial Records under the management
of the Ministry of Justice (MOJ).

Under the project, the Centre will be responsible
for providing, receiving and updating judicial records, managing judicial
records databases and the governing of judicial records at the national level.

Do Thi Thuy Lan from the MOJ said as judicial
records are now kept at different agencies and organisations, the establishment
of the centre will be time-consuming.

In addition, judicial records are important not
only for procedural activities but also serve basic human rights, she said,
adding that this requires accuracy in dealing with information.

Together with the Law on Judicial Records which
took effect in July 2010, the establishment of the centre is expected to benefit
people through the simplification of judicial procedures.

According to the MOJ, the National Centre for
Judicial Records is very important for society’s functioning as well as human
resource management.
