Manh was
speaking at a ceremony to celebrate 65 years since the election of Viet Nam’s
first National Assembly and to summarise the 2007-11 term in Thai Nguyen
yesterday.

The
Party leader also praised Thai Nguyen deputies for promoting a high spirit of
responsibility to voters, effectively contributing to legislation and
supervision, and deciding on important national issues during the 12th National
Assembly.

He asked
authorities at all levels and people in Thai Nguyen to exert more efforts in
developing the province in a comprehensive manner in the context of the present
economic climate.

Manh
said administration at all levels must prepare well for the election of the 13th
National Assembly and People’s Councils for the 2011-16 term.

A report
released by the Thai Nguyen National Assembly delegation showed it had helped
settle 778 complaints and petitions during the 12th NA term. Members of the
delegation also met with 30,000 voters and 2,000 constituents.

Conference spotlights sustainable development

Vietnam has reaped an average annual economic growth
rate of over 7 percent and made considerable progress in poverty reduction,
primary education universalization and healthcare services during the past
decade.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan highlighted
the nation’s success while chairing the third national conference on sustainable
development in the capital city of Hanoi on January 6.
The conference saw the participation of representatives from concerned
ministries, agencies and international organisations. Leaders from 63 cities and
provinces attended the event via a live TV show.
However, the deputy PM pointed out a number of shortcomings, including
inappropriate instructions from authorities at all levels, weak dissemination of
information, falling productivity in many fields, environmental pollution,
widening income gaps and the unsatisfactory development of science and
technology.
Mr Nhan emphasized the need to map out medium and long-term roadmaps and
solutions to ensure macroeconomic stability, and balance in terms of capital,
land, human resources and energy.

Fatherland Front urged to work on national unity

President
Nguyen Minh Triet requested the Presidium of the Fatherland Front Central
Committee to speed up activities aimed at consolidating national solidarity and
unity, asking for an active voice in Party building work and legislation, and a
reflection of voters’ opinions and petitions at a meeting yesterday in the
capital.

The
President made the request at a meeting to summarise the implementation of the
co-ordination between the State President and the Presidium of the Viet Nam
Fatherland Front Central Committee in 2010, and to set key tasks in 2011.

Triet
said the strength of the nation lies within national solidarity and unit that
contribute to successfully implementing socio-economic development tasks,
alleviating poverty and maintaining political security and social order.

At the
meeting, he also highly appreciated the co-ordination between the Presidium of
the VFF Central Committee and its member organisations with the President and
Vice President in State diplomacy and people-to-people diplomacy activities to
strengthen international and national solidarity and unity, promote patriotism
and implement socio-economic development.

The
President attentively listened to straightforward and profound opinions raised
at the meeting, concentrating on the country’s shortcomings such as unstable
economic growth and substandard living conditions, especially for those living
in mountainous and remote areas, as well as the improper renumeration policy for
scientists and artists.

Regarding key co-ordination tasks for this year, Triet asked the presidium to
focus on consolidating national solidarity and unity, promoting patriotism and
speeding up Party building work while promoting the building of a socialist
law-governed State.

Participants also heard Vu Trong Kim, vice chairman and general secretary of the
Front’s Central Committee, deliver a report on co-ordination in various aspects
between the presidium and the State President.

The
report also pointed out what was yet to be done in the implementation of
effective co-ordination, including irregular co-ordination in settling people’s
complaints and petitions as well as legislation.

Vice
President Nguyen Thi Doan and Chairman of the Presidium of the VFF Central
Committee Huynh Dam were also present at the meeting.

President Triet praises efforts of veteran

President
Nguyen Minh Triet applauded the efforts made and assistance given by veteran
experts sent by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union’s Central Committee to
Cambodia to perform a tour of international co-operation from 1979-89.

Speaking
with veterans at a meeting in the capital city yesterday, Triet said the
friendship and relations between the people of the two countries had achieved
comprehensive development in economy, culture and education among others.

The
President called on people today and future generations to continue to deepen
friendly relations and co-operation between the three countries of Viet Nam,
Cambodia and Laos.

Also at
the meeting, Triet stressed on the important role of the youth union in creating
a good environment to train young people in human dignity and ethics.

In June
1979, a delegation of young Vietnamese people was sent to Cambodia to help the
country train personnel and implement activities relevant to young people there.

Ha Noi Party Executive discusses work ahead

The Ha
Noi Party Executive Committee discussed Party building work, contributed
opinions to working regulations and determined a working programme for the
city’s Party Committee and its Inspection Commission at a meeting held yesterday
in the capital.

Politburo member and Ha Noi Party Committee Secretary Pham Quang Nghi said the
content discussed had carried a very important meaning not only for this year,
but also for the tenure as a whole.

He asked
delegates to focus on analysing the current situation and reasons contributing
to what had already been done and what was left to do, especially on subjective
reasons and measures to be taken this year.

Participants were also expected to contribute to each working programme with a
view to helping committees at different levels and local governments
successfully and effectively implement the city’s 15th Party Congress
Resolutions and socio-economic development plan from 2011-15.
