Vietnam, Paraguay determined to boost cooperation Vietnam and Paraguay have potential and conditions to promote a stable, long-lasting, equal and mutually beneficial relationship in many fields. Party General Secretary and Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Phu Trong made this affirmation while receiving President of the Republic of Paraguay, Fernando Lugo Mendez, in Hanoi on March 9. He also confirmed Vietnam’s determination in boosting and consolidating the fine friendship and cooperation between the two countries. | Photo: VNA | President Mendez spoke highly of Vietnam’s prestige and position in the region and in the world. He also congratulated Vietnam on its successful organisation of the 11th Party Congress, saying he believed that the Communist Party of Vietnam will lead the people to implement the Congress’ Resolution which aims for a wealthy people and a strong, democratic, fair and civilised country as it moves towards socialism. The President appreciated Vietnam’s national development experience and expressed his hope to boost bilateral solidarity and friendship and expand cooperation between the two States and people. Receiving President Mendez earlier the same day, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung affirmed that Vietnam was willing to cooperate with Paraguay in all fields, including politics, trade, education and training, culture and especially telecommunications and agriculture. He said he hoped Paraguay would soon recognise Vietnam as a market economy and work closely with Vietnam in international forums. Considering Vietnam an example for economic development, hunger eradication and poverty reduction, President Mendez said he hoped the two countries will tighten bilateral cooperation in the future. Ties with University of Chicago get a lift The Vietnamese Government continues to support relations between the University of Chicago and Viet Nam to build a nanotechnology centre and business management training programmes in Viet Nam. Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan made the remarks while receiving Professor Robert Jeffrey Zimmer, dean of the University of Chicago, yesterday, March 9, in Ha Noi. Nhan said co-operation with the US university would provide a model to future programmes that are looking to train high-quality employees. He said the Government was interested in building two international universities through co-operative programmes with Germany and France. Professor Zimmer said he was impressed with Viet Nam during his first visit here and promised to do his best to implement the agreement, which would include the regular exchange of lecturers and experts from several fields. At the meeting, Fields Medallist Professor Ngo Bao Chau also shared his opinions on how to enhance co-operation between the state, enterprises and scientists and how to make enterprises trust in Vietnamese scientists. He said the appropriate policies for education, scientific research and international educational co-operation would contribute to the development of the nation’s educational future. On the same day, the Ministry of Education and Training announced the founding of the Viet Nam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics and appointed Chau as the director of the institute. Chau pledged to connect Viet Nam’s mathematics with global contemporaries. The institute aims to become a leading research centre that will allow Vietnamese mathematicians to develop projects and will seek to nurture young talent. The Government will provide regular funding for the institute’s operations during the next decade. Hanoi’s preparations for NA and People’s Council elections well underway An inspection team led by Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Municipal Party Committee and Chairwoman of the Hanoi Municipal Election Committee Ngo Thi Doan Thanh examined preparations for the 13th National Assembly and People’s Council elections in Hanoi’s Dong Da district in Hanoi on March 9. All preparations for the 13th NA election and the People’s Council elections at all levels for the 2011-2016 term have been basically completed. Mrs Thanh praised the Dong Da district People’s Council Election Committee for making thorough preparations to ensure the elections will be held in a democratic and lawful manner. In the future, the district will step up its propaganda activities to help everyone better understand the content and significance of the elections. The same day, the Chairman of the Hanoi Municipal People’s Committee and Vice Chairman of the Hanoi Municipal Election Committee, Nguyen The Thao, inspected work in Ba Dinh district which, he said has been done well. Meanwhile, the Vice Chairwoman of the Hanoi Municipal People’s Committee, Ngo Thi Thanh Hang said 22 units in Gia Lam district have been finished with preparation work. Minister and Chairman of Government Office visits Japan Politburo member, Minister and Chairman of the Government Office, Nguyen Xuan Phuc has successfully concluded his visit to Japan at the invitation of the Japanese Government. This was the first visit to Japan by a politburo member of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) after the 11th National Party Congress. The visit aimed to promote and deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries and gain experience from Japan in improving government staff’s capacity. During the visit, Mr Phuc met with leaders of various Japanese ministries, major organisations and economic groups. He briefed them on Vietnam’s significant achievements in socio-economic development and thanked the Japanese Government and its people for supporting Vietnam’s process of national construction and development. Mr Phuc also informed them about the outcomes of the 11th National Party Congress and affirmed that the Party, State and Government of Vietnam always gives top priority to developing strategic partnership with Japan in its external policy. He praised the comprehensive development of the Vietnam-Japan strategic partnership, particularly after Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s visit to Vietnam last year. Vietnam wishes to continue its cooperation with Japan in carrying out big projects to build a nuclear power plant in Binh Thuan, exploit rare earth and develop infrastructure facilities, Mr Phuc said. He also asked Japan to assist Vietnam in training human resources, including leaders and managers of the Government Office and other ministries and sectors. Japanese officials congratulated the success of Vietnam’s 11th National Party Congress and expressed their wish to develop the strategic partnership with Vietnam and reiterated their commitments to implementing major infrastructure development and boosting cooperation with Vietnam in the development of human resources. VOV hands over broadcasting station to Laos Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) officially handed over a broadcasting station for northern Laos to the Lao Ministry of Information and Culture on March 8. The ceremony, held in the former Lao capital of Luang Prabang, was attended by VOV Director General Vu Van Hien and Lao Deputy Minister of Information and Culture Bosengkham Vongdala. The Luang Prabang station project was built on an area of nearly 12,000m2 at a cost of more than VND57 billion from the Vietnamese government’s non-refundable aid for the 2006-2010 period. The station can transmit broadcasting signals to the entire provinces in northern Laos.
