During the past term, the delegation achieved important results in law making, supervision, handling complaints and denunciations, and fully participating in NA sessions. Based on the annual law-making programme, the NA delegation contributed its opinions on 35 draft laws at NA sessions, organised 213 meetings with voters, and received 2,100 citizens. In his speech, NA Chairman Trong praised the delegation’s significant contributions to the 12th NA in terms of legislation, supervision and deciding on important national issues. Mr Trong asked the delegation to renew its operations and increase the professional skills of its staff to better counsel and advise the NA. He also hoped that every Hanoi NA deputy will continue to uphold the tradition of solidarity and make positive contributions to the NA- the highest body of power representing voters’ rights. The delegation, along with provinces and cities throughout the country needs to thoroughly prepare for the upcoming 13th NA and the People’s Council elections at all levels, Mr Trong emphasised. Person-to-person diplomacy lauded A Party Politburo member has hailed the contributions of informal, person-to-person diplomacy to the nation’s political, economic, cultural, social, scientific and technological achievements. Addressing a conference in Ha Noi yesterday, Politburo member Truong Tan Sang, who is also permanent member of the Party Central Committee Secretariat, stressed the need for diplomacy to focus on improving ties with neighbouring and traditionally friendly countries, as well as progressive forces around the world. He also emphasised the need to more actively popularise unofficial diplomatic efforts between individuals, non-governmental organisations and business and trade groups to increase the understanding and support around the world for Viet Nam’s doi moi (renewal) process, improve the nation’s effectiveness in multilateral forums, and seek assistance from international friends for poverty reduction and socio-economic development, as well as to combat natural disasters and environmental degradation. Over the past year, person-to-person diplomacy has achieved significant results in strengthening solidarity, friendship and co-operation with neighbouring countries, gaining support from international friends, maintaining political order, protecting the national interest, creating a favourable environment for national development, and promoting solidarity and support for democracy and peace among progressive peoples around the world, according to a report of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations presented at yesterday’s conference. Through diplomatic efforts, mass and popular organistions joined hands with relevant agencies to fight erroneous acts and promote the rights of women, children, the disabled and the elderly – efforts widely applauded and supported by international organisations. Positive results were reflected in non-governmental aid to Viet Nam last year estimated at US$280 million. An increasing number of organisations considered diplomatic efforts as a necessary element of their goal to promote trade, investment and economic development through marketing and building trade names, including the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other economic associations representing the seacooking, garment, leather, rice, and coffee sectors. Work to assist Vietnamese expatriates to return to the country to invest, share experiences and implement economic and cultural co-operation programmes also made significant contributions, according to the report. Won Yoo Chul said the two countries, with many similarities in culture, history and economy, would benefit the two peoples, and expressed his wish that Viet Nam would support South Korea to strengthen co-operation relations with ASEAN countries. The two sides signed an agreement on further co-operation. Mongolia trade unions boost co-operation The resumption of traditional co-operative relations and solidarity with Mongolian trade unions was one of the top priorities of Vietnamese trade unions, a representative said yesterday. Vice President of the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labour Nguyen Van Ngang said at meeting with Vice President of the Confederation of Mongolian Trade Unions Amgalanbaatar Khayankhyarvaa that the exchange of visits between the two countries last year helped resume bilateral ties. The Mongolian official said that with many similarities in policies, the two organisations could support each other for mutual development. He said he hoped the two sides would continue to co-operate in research and information exchanges in ways that would contribute to strengthening bilateral ties. The two sides exchanged information on socio-economic situations, trade union activities and workers’ movements in the two countries and also discussed issues of mutual concern for further co-operation.
