Lao Party Congress confirms
progress

Vientiane — Chummaly Sayasone was
re-elected General Secretary at the conclusion of a five-day sitting for the
ninth National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP)
yesterday.

On Sunday, Politburo member and Vice
President of Laos Bunnhang Volachit reported that 61 people had been elected to
the Party Central Committee.

The first session of the ninth Party
Central Committee yesterday elected an 11-member Politburo, a nine-member
Secretariat and a seven-member Central Inspection Commission.

Politburo member and Deputy Prime
Minister Somsavad Lengsavath said Congress agreed to the review of the
implementation of the eighth Congress’ resolution, especially on national
defence, security, socio-economic development, consolidation and completion of
the State administrative system and public works.

He said that over the past five years,
the foundations and new momentum had been set for the development of the
country.

The Congress made a thorough analysis of
shortcomings in the Party’s leadership blamed for failure to complete key tasks
in a number of fields.

Congress said it was determined to take
the country forward, fulfilling the goal of creating wealthy nation, a strong
country, solidarity and a united, democratic, just and civilised
society.

It adopted several important targets to
be completed by 2015. They include political stability, economic development,
reducing poor households to less than 10 per cent of the country’s total – and
integrating Laos more and more into the regional and international
worlds.

Party leader Chummaly Sayasone said the
success of the ninth congress confirmed the Party’s maturity and growth in terms
of politics, ideology and organisation.
