NA members unsatisfied with Government report

While acknowledging what the Government has achieved in its 2007-2011 term as stated in a report, National Assembly deputies have pointed out the shortcomings the next administration will need to fix. At the ongoing session of the legislature in Hanoi, lawmakers on Wednesday were divided into groups to look into review reports on the five-year performances of the State President, the Government and the Prime Minister. In the Hanoi group discussion, Nguyen Dinh Quyen pointed out that the Government report was more like one on the country’s socio-economic performance than a review of its past operations. The Government should have detailed what it has done in line with the Constitution and laws, Quyen said. Quyen said the report listed the mistakes made by the Government and that the reasons for those errors were not at all new. “That’s why the report is not of high quality,” he said. “The Government report should be of real substance.” Deputy Nguyen Thi Hong Ha said the Government report did not touch upon a pressing issue about the inconsistency between Government policies and those adopted by its agencies. Ha Van Hien, chairman of the Economic Committee of the NA, said in the next term, the Government should strengthen the coordination in issuing and implementing its policies to stave off inconsistencies. On the economic front, Hien suggested, the Government should focus on restructuring the economy. “If only focusing on the kind of stopgap measures the Government has taken, the economy cannot get out of the doldrums,” he added. Meanwhile, members in other groups like Vu Quang Hai of Hung Yen Province said the solution to the Vinashin case had not won public support, thus exposing the weakness of the Government in managing State-owned enterprises. “If there was no stricter monitoring mechanism, we would, sooner or later, see Vinashin-like cases in the future,” Hai said. The NA will have a plenary session on Friday to discuss the Government, Prime Minister and President reports. Source: SGT |
