One candidate in Hanoi and one in the southern province of Bac Lieu have withdrawn from the official list of candidates of the upcoming National Assembly (NA) election. The total candidates are now 830.
The Secretary General of the Election Council, Pham Minh Tuyen, on April 25, reported to the NA that the council had received 114 letters of complaints, including 37 that are related to NA deputies, People’s Council deputies who are managed by the Politburo and the Central Secretariat. After the third consultation meeting, the total number of candidates were 832, including 182 from central agencies, and 650 from local agencies and 15 self-nominated candidates. The number is now 830 after two candidates in Hanoi and Bac Lieu withdrew from the election. 500 NA deputies will be elected from 830 candidates. Chairman of the NA Committee for Defense and Security, Le Quang Binh, said that the election is coming in one month, so more complaints would be made, especially complaints against People’s Council deputies. Binh urged relevant agencies to quickly deal with people’s complaints and answer them as soon as possible. Party Secretary General and NA Chair, Nguyen Phu Trong, also emphasized that people’s complaints must be solved thoroughly. In the election of NA deputies and People’s Council deputies on May 22 2011, there will have 599 election councils of district level People’s Councils, and 10,630 election council of commune-level People’s Councils. There will have a total of over 91,000 voting precincts throughout the country. Constituents will cast their votes to elect 500 NA deputies, over 3,200 deputies of provincial level People’s Councils, over 21,000 deputies of district level People’s Councils, and over 280,000 deputies of commune level People’s Councils.
