Each year the site of the President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and its surroundings welcome millions of pilgrims who wish to pay their respects to Vietnam’s greatest citizen. The area also gives visitors a chance to view artifacts and documents about the revolutionary activities of President Ho Chi Minh, or "Uncle Ho" as he is affectionately known by Vietnamese people.

Because of the love and admiration the Vietnamese people had for their great leader, after he passed away on September 2, 1969, the Vietnamese State ordered construction of the mausoleum to preserve the President's body.

President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum welcomes thousands of visitors a day.

Commencing on September 2, 1973 and with the labours of people from all walks of life, construction of the granite structure continued non-stop for two years. On August 29, 1975 the President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum was opened.

To view the President’s body, visitors must climb a stairway lined with security guards dressed in starchy stiff, white military uniforms, to a room on the second floor of the building that contains the glass coffin. The leader’s body is adorned in white khaki trousers and shirt, and near his feet is a pair of rubber sandals, identical to the way the President dressed when he was alive.

On exiting the rear of the mausoleum guests are directed along a pebble pathway that leads to a vast garden behind the Presidential Palace, undoubtedly the most peaceful place in Hanoi. Here there is an orchard, rows of coconut trees, eglantine rose bushes and the air is full of the soft, yet heady scent of jasmine.

Trees in the orchard have been brought in from all parts of the country: the star apple tree from the south, the grapefruit tree from Phuc Trach, the orange tree from Xuan Mai, persimmon from Thach That in the north and other trees from the central region of the country.

The centrepiece of the garden is the house-on-stilts where President Ho Chi Minh worked and relaxed. It has been maintained exactly as the President kept it: a single bed, a few eating utensils, an unadorned tea set on a small table. It’s an image that clearly reflects Ho Chi Minh’s simple life and pure virtues.

Ho Chi Minh at each end of the Square are rows of Plumeria trees and 18 cycad plants presented by the people in the delta provinces on the President's birthday. Adjacent to the avenue is the famous Ba Dinh Square, a vast carpet of green grass

Ho Chi Minh Museum always attracts a great number of visitors of different social strata.

About 200 metres south-east of the mausoleum is the Ho Chi Minh Museum. Seen from afar, the museum looks like a huge lotus blooming amid a vast area. The upper four square blocks are like four petals pointing in the direction of Hung Vuong Avenue, the house-on-stilts, Ngoc Ha Street and Nguyen Thai Hoc Street.
Stylized construction of these four blocks helps connect the entire architecture with the surrounding environment. The museum's interior decoration is set logically and aesthetically, with many documents and photos on display, providing the viewers with useful information about the life and revolutionary activities of President Ho Chi Minh.
The museum was inaugurated on the President's 100th birthday anniversary, May 19, 1990, simultaneous with UNESCO’s recognition of him as a national hero and cultural celebrity. The State is committed to keeping this site as a memorial to President Ho Chi Minh, enlightening generations to come of his significance in Vietnam’s fight for independence.
