VietNamNet Bridge – They are young and qualified. They were invited to assume posts with high incomes. However, they still decided to become teachers, a career which cannot make them rich.

Young teachers commended for their excellent contribution to Vietnam’s education and training

The stories of two outstanding teachers were related at the talk between teachers and audience members on November 18 on the occasion of Vietnamese Teachers’ Day, November 20. They were two of the 97 young lecturers commended for their excellent contributions to Vietnam’s education and training.

“I wish to work as a teacher all my life’ were the words both of them spoke out at the talk.

Successfully defending the PhD thesis in South Korea when he was 27 years old, Dr Tu Diep Cong Thanh still decided to return to Vietnam, though he received an invitation from a famous South Korean university to work for the university with the salary of $22,000 a year, not including allowance. It was simply because he wanted to devote himself more to the country.

“The country needs young educated people like us,” Thanh said.

When Thanh returned, he also received attractive invitations from international groups and corporations. However, he insisted on working as a lecturer at the HCM City University of Technology, the job he did for three years before he left for South Korea for the doctorate degree.

“I became a lecturer because I have always had the dream of becoming a teacher all my life,” he said.

Thanh added that he believes that Vietnamese universities are a good environment for him to work and do research, though the income is low. “My happiness is to be able to devote myself to the country,” Thanh said.

Now, at the age of 30, Thanh is Deputy Dean of the Mechanical Faculty under the HCM City University of Technology, one of the most prestigious universities in Vietnam.

As for Vo Thi Minh Tien, the young teacher at Trung Phu High School in Cu Chi district in HCM City, becoming a teacher was also the childhood dream of a poor student. Tien experienced a lot of difficulties before she graduated from pedagogical university and became a real teacher.

With excellent marks, Tien had the right to choose the school she wanted to work in, but she chose a school in Cu Chi district, a poor area in the suburbs of the city.

“I was a poor student, so I well understand poor students. I wish to help my students to escape from poverty as I could,” Tien said.
