VietNamNet BridgeA joint programme between the HCM City’s Department of Education and Training (DoET) and the University of Cambridge to hold ESOL examinations has provided thousands of students with a chance to improve their English skills.

Speaking at a function yesterday to celebrate the project’s second anniversary, Dr Huynh Cong Minh, director of the DoET, said this successful collaboration meant that gaining access to internationally recognised English language certification in the country had never been “so straightforward.”

Great opportunity

Sean Hayde, assistant director at Cambridge ESOL, said: “This will be a great opportunity for us to report back on our successful work with the DoET.

“Thanks to the initiative, we have helped improve the English language skills of thousands of students in HCM City.”

Thousands of students from 150 city-based primary and high schools have over the past two years benefited from a range of English language qualifications like Cambridge ESOL’s Key English Test, Preliminary English Test, and First Certificate in English.

The Cambridge Young Learners English Test continues to be one of the most popular in the country.

Under a Government-approved project, by 2020 foreign language training at local schools will be based on the six-level European Union standards.

ESOL provides examinations in English language to over 2 million people every year in more than 130 countries, including a range of qualifications for language teachers.
