Lookatvietnam - Schools in the capital are hoping teaching quality will receive a boost this year, following a move that gave headmasters greater recruitment power at their own schools.

Nguyen Thiet Son, the headmaster of Kim Lien High School, welcomed the change in recruitment responsibilities transferred from education and training departments to headmasters of schools who could now look for teachers that were the most suitable with their school’s individual demands.

“This is a new way of selecting teachers. The schools themselves can choose the teachers they want, which means they no longer have to wonder about the quality of teachers who are assigned to start working at their school,” said Son.

Interviews complete

Director of the city’s Department of Education and Training, Nguyen Huu Do, said about 125 state-owned schools and training centres in the city last week completed interviews and tests for 991 applicants for teaching positions.

Each school established its own examination council responsible for holding examinations for teachers applying for jobs at their school.

Before, the department held group examinations to select teachers and allocate which schools they would be working at.

To ensure the recruitment would be carried out according to regulations, the city’s education and training department held training courses for members of examination councils before the start of this year’s recruitment drive.

Examination council members also received guidelines on the recruitment processes, said Do.

In addition, during the examinations, schools were visited by inspection teams from the Department, which checked on every examination council.

Nguyen Hai Anh, one of the applicants for a teaching job, said he had applied for the first time, as the new recruitment process allowed him to choose Kim Lien High School, a school he said was suitable with his qualifications.

“The school’s examination council was also professional and fair as they publicised 10 possible examination questions 10 days before the examination,” said Hai Anh.

Applicants sitting the exams also had to take a practical test to determine if their teaching methods were sound and engaging.

The results of the recruitment drive will be publicised in the middle of February.

Successful applicants will sign one-year contracts with schools instead of signing contracts with the city’s education and training department as before.

Headmasters will then have the right to sign three-year contracts with teachers they want to keep. Teachers who have signed two contracts are eligible for permanent positions.
