MOET has released draft standards for the skill development of 5-year-old children, which says that children of this age need to have good pronunciation and must be able to count to ten.

MOET has released the draft standards in order to help teachers at nursery schools and kindergartens compile suitable curricula, and let parents know what they should be helping their children with. These will also serve as the basis for the adjustment and development of education programmes, the drawing-up of documents related to the overall development of children.

Four spheres of skill development are mentioned in the draft standards: 1/ awareness and feelings 2/ social relations, language 3/ communication and 4/ readiness to learn.

In terms of language development and communication, besides having to have good pronunciation, children need to be able to write their names correctly, know the 29 letters of the Vietnamese alphabet, count up to ten and name the days of week in order.

In terms of feelings and social relation development, children need to be able to say their names, addresses (street address and telephone number), parents’ names, need to have the habit of greeting adults, saying thank you and apologising, have a sense of environmental protection (not throw rubbish everywhere, not waste electricity and water).

Teachers need to submit reports at the end of every semester about the development of children to school management boards. The assessments of the students will be kept in children’s files.
