Since the beginning of 2009, only a few businesses have contacted economics and technology universities to ask for help in their recruitment plans. In general, the recruitment market is now very gloomy.

At the same time in previous years, the Banking Institute, which has very hot study branches, was busy organizing job workshops and recruitment advisory days. In 2008, the institute organized three big job workshops. However, the situation is quite different today. Since the beginning of the year, no company has come to discuss recruitment of graduates of the institute.

Dr. Do Kim Hao, Dean of the Banking Faculty, under the Banking Institute, said that Asia Commercial Bank (ACB) once recruited 32 out of 42 students of the K6 C class in 2007. Meanwhile, only three students from K8 C class hope they will be recruited after the probation period.

The Law University has received only one order from a business to look for one or two employees. The requirements prove to be relatively strict: the business wants graduates at above-average level. Meanwhile, in previous years, graduates at the average level were also accepted.

The Hanoi University of Mining and Geology received representatives from 200 businesses in 2006, then 310 in 2007, and 500 in 2008, who came to the university to recruit graduates. In 2008, there were 1,150 jobs for 1,020 graduates. A business recruited graduates for 45 positions at last year’s job day. Meanwhile, only one business has come to the university to look for employees so far this year.

Associate Professor Dr. Dinh Xuan Hang, Dean of Banking and Insurance Faculty under the Finance Academy, said that even economics graduates are struggling to look for jobs. In 2007, some 2/3 of 50 students could get jobs right after the probation period. However, in 2008, as the stock market fell, the graduates found it hard to get jobs, and many students had to apply for jobs in other fields.

Waiting for opportunities

Duong Thi Linh, a student from the Business Administration Faculty under the Banking Institute, said that many friends of hers are now taking part-time jobs, and collaborating with banks and market survey companies.

Meanwhile, Linh said she needs to follow other training sources, on credit or accountancy, and learn English in order to get good jobs when the economy recovers.

In fact, excellent students still have many job opportunities now. The law graduates at the ‘excellent’ level will be automatically recruited by the Ministry of Justice. However, in the last 3-4 years, only 5-7 students can get ‘red degrees’ among 1,000 students.

The students who graduate from the Post & Telecommunications Institute of Technology, which belongs to the Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Group, and have the marks of 9.0 and higher, will be employed by the group.

Hang said that in the current period, businesses will certainly set high requirements for candidates and demand high quality students. Dr. Do Kim Hao, Dean of Banking Faculty from the Banking Institute said that European projects always require high skills and fluent English, while not many students can meet all those demands.

Universities help students look for jobs

Though the job opportunities prove to be fewer than previous years, the Post & Telecommunications Institute of Technology could still get 300-500 jobs for students by the end of 2008, according to Nguyen Quang Anh from the Centre for Student Support and Consultancy

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Hoi Loan, Head of the Students’ Affairs Division under the University of Social Affairs and Humanities, said that the university has taken initiatives in cooperating with the Vietnam Association of Business Administrators. With their cooperation, the university’s students can have better conditions for learning and practicing and receive privileges when the association’s member companies recruit employees.
