VietNamNet Bridge – An open dialogue between students and Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan took place on February 15 in the evening.

Students raised questions at the dialogue

Duong Xuan Tra My, a fourth year student in the Hanoi delegation of students, raised a question: “What will the government do to help us look for jobs?”

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan frankly admitted that the state has not done well in forecasting the demand for human resources.

Nhyan said that universities have been training based on their capability rather than the demand of society. In fact, universities have not paid appropriate attention to finding jobs for graduate students.

Nhan said that the national centre for human resource forecasting was established in 2008, and will be charge of providing necessary information about the branches and careers society needs.

Nhan has advised students to begin looking for jobs when they begin studying. In order to find suitable jobs, students need to practice the skills necessary for them in their jobs, including living skills and interview skills.

Students can borrow money to purchase computers

Do Minh Tung, a student from Hai Phong Medical University asked: “The high inflation and higher tuition fees have made the loan worth VND800,000 not enough to cover basic needs of a student’s life. Will it be possible for students to borrow loans to purchase computers which can help improve the learning of foreign languages and informatics?”

Nguyen Van Ly, Deputy General Director of the Bank for Social Purposes, who was also present at the dialogue, answered that students need to contact the bank to get the loan once a year. “We will provide loans once a year, at the beginning of every year to support you,” Ly said.

The Ministry of Education and Training also said that it has joined forces with several companies in the programme to market low cost computers for students.

According to Nhan, though Vietnam just kicked off the large-scale credit programme for students in 2007, more than 1.2mil students have got loans, 53% of whom are university and junior college students.

Learning does not go together with practice

Le Hoang Minh from the HCM City University of Technology said that students nowadays lack practice, and asked if the government will have measures to settle the problem.

Nhan said that low tuition fees and the lack of dynamism of students themselves have led to the fact that students lack practice. He added that the ministry is going to build up a suitable mechanism which will create favourable conditions for students to access scientific researches.

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Dinh Tien said that the ministry has a fund for science and technology development, which has been operational since 2008. Tien said that students who love scientific research can join the programme.

Dormitory building programme kicked off?

Nguyen Thi Phuong Duyen from the HCM City Industrial Arts University asked what the government will do to deal with the problem of lack of dormitories. The number of students has increased by 12 times in 2008 in comparison with 1986, while the seats for students in dormitories just increased by 1.5 times.

Nhan said that the government already had a dormitory development programme; however, the programme has not been blessed by the Ministry of Education and Training. Meanwhile, universities have not paid reasonable attention to building dormitories.

The ministry is going to submit to the government the programme on developing dormitories by the end of March 2009.
