US Secretary of State joins VEF leadership
Published: 16/02/2009 05:00
The Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF) has publicized its new board of directors, which includes American notables such as Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and Secretary of Treasury Timothy F. Geithner.
The board also consists of US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Senator Jim Webb, Senator David Vitter, Congressman Joseph R. Pitts and Congressman Earl Blumenauer. Its chairman is Dr Stephen F. Maxner, who heads the Vietnam Centre at Texas Tech University (TTU). Dr Maxner has frequently visited Vietnam since 1998 and has actively participated in the centre’s Study Abroad programme, escorting hundreds of the TTU students to Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. Dr Maxner has also played a crucial role in promoting projects on educational cooperation with Vietnam as well as in hosting educational delegations coming from Vietnam to visit the US. The VEF aims to promote close ties between the US and Vietnam through educational exchanges in science, engineering, mathematics, medicine and technology. Since 2003, it has provided 267 scholarships for Vietnamese nationals to pursue graduate and post-graduate studies at US universities. VEF executive director Vo Van Toi said at a recent VEF conference that up to more than 90 percent of Vietnamese students recruited by the foundation achieved excellent academic scores in the US. Also at the meeting, Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Le Cong Phung highly praised the VEF’s educational programmes, which he said have helped train high-tech human resources for Vietnam.
