Looking for jobs after university graduation proves to be not an easy thing nowadays. A lot of students have to pay several hundred millions of VND to solicit the posts in agencies which bring the income of just several hundred thousands of VND a month.

Having graduated from the Law University with an excellent degree, Nguyen Linh thinks she can look for a good job in Hanoi with a relatively high salary by joining competitions. However, Linh’s parents have decided that Linh should work as the office secretary for a company that they have ‘bought’ at US $7,000 (VND 119 million).

Linh has obeyed her parents, believing that the ‘expensive’ job will bring a high pay. However, she only gets VND 800,000 a month and does the same simple work every day: washing cups and making tea.

A lot of parents, whose children are learning at pedagogical universities, are also moving heaven and earth to look for jobs for their children, though the children will graduate in several months. Some of the parents said that they have to arrange stable jobs for their children right now so that their daughters can get married soon.

Do Thuong, a student from Hoai Duc district in Hanoi, related saying that her parents decided to spend VND 25 million to get the job post of a teacher of a secondary school for their daughter. Meanwhile, Thuong only receives several hundred thousand VND a month, which is not enough to buy cooking for her and cover her subsistence expenses. “With such a salary, I have to get salaries for ten years and do not have meals every day to save up enough money to ‘make even’,” Thuong said.

Thuong’s said that VND 25 million proves to be the ‘price’ for the job of collaborator-teacher. Meanwhile, in order to become official teacher of the school and have name added into the payroll, one should pay VND 50 million or VND 100 million.

Thanh Tuoi in Cau Dien town in the suburb of Hanoi related that she is trying to get a job in a hospital, but she has been told that she will have to spend VND 100 million to reach that end.

The ‘job prices’ prove to be sky high, even for boring jobs. It costs VND 10 million to move from one school to another closer to home. It takes VND 80 million to get the right to take administrative work for a school. Meanwhile, the jobs only bring the salary of VND 1 million a month.

Huong’s friends all said that she was so lucky to get the job in a district’s hospital. However, Huong is not as lucky as people think, as she can get only VND 1 million a month, which is not enough to cover her basic needs.

At first, Thanh Huyen in Dan Phuong district in Hanoi was told that she had to pay VND 50 million to get a job in an agency in Hanoi. However, Huyen successfully negotiated with the ‘job supplier’ and the price was downed to VND 30 million. As she gets VND 800,000 a month, she will only be able to get the VND 30 million, ‘the initial capital,’ after three years of working.

However, Linh, Thuong, Huyen, and Tuoi still feel happy because they can go working and receive salaries. Meanwhile, a lot of other students still go to the office every day but have to experience a lot of ‘probation periods’ for which they do not get any money.
