Vietnam should build universities of international standards which combine training activities and scientific research in order to reach more advanced level in the region and the world.

The view was shared by Vietnamese and foreign scientists and experts at a seminar on tertiary education in Hanoi on March 30.

The seminar was co-organised by the French Embassy in Vietnam and the Vietnam Science and Technology Institute, as part of the 2009 Francophone Congress Programme.

Participants emphasised that to increase the quality of education in Vietnam, it is essential to adjust tertiary education in line with the country’s socio-economic development and international standards. Universities should adopt modern methods and textbooks from developed countries and build a national data centre for training, conducting scientific research and evaluating the academic results of students.

They suggested that Vietnam simplify procedures allowing foreign businesses and well-known universities to build wholly foreign-invested universities and open branches in the country.

They pointed out some shortcomings in tertiary education programmes and vocational training during the current modernisation and industrialisation process.
