A 15 year-old Vietnamese student, Tran Le Hong Lien, has defeated 50 other candidates to win first prize in the Swedish Secondary School Mathematics Competition, according to the Vietnamese embassy in Sweden.

Tran Le Hong Lien moved to Sweden with her parents in 2005 when her father, Tran Chi Thanh, a research student, received a PhD scholarship at the nuclear energy safety faculty of the Royal Institute of Technology. At the time, she had just finished primary school in Vietnam.

Despite facing some language difficulties, she quickly adapted to her new environment and was highly praised for her ability to do mathematics after only a short time.

In addition, Hong Lien also took third piano prize at the 2008 Steinway Festival in Stockholm, Sweden. She began studying piano when she was only 6 years-old. Before arriving in Sweden, she had studied piano at the Hanoi Conservatoire. Now she is studying music at the Swedish Royal Conservatoire.
