The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) announced the result of the contest “Read for a better life” and displayed excellent entries on April 23 in Bac Ninh province.

The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) announced the result of the contest “Read for a better life” and displayed excellent entries on April 23 in Bac Ninh province.

This was the key event that Vietnam organize during Global Action Week for Education 2009, which has participation of millions people in over 164 countries worldwide.

Launched in early March, the competition drew great interest from people from all walks of life, hence the number of 60,000 entries from 62 out of 64 provinces in the country.

There was a wide range of contestant ages with some children as young as students of Grade 1 and the oldest entrant was 84 years old. Students and teachers of all levels nationwide responded the contest with large numbers of entries. Hanoi alone had 16,000 entries sent to the contest.

The entries included moving real life stories of people who overcame illiteracy; people who are devoted to bring literacy to communities; and those who could only dream about being able to read and write.

There is a wide range of genres from autobiographies, essays, poetry, painting, and song. Entries focused on examples of people in real life, who overcome difficulties to learn, and contributions of those who helped eliminate illiteracy, as well as stories of the importance of literacy to bring about positive changes in life.

The contest has achieved its goal of highlighting the importance of literacy in the community nationwide.

Apart from the main prizes, interesting entries will be selected for print in the Big Read for Vietnam and posted on the competition’s blog.

The contest was launched in early March by MOET, in cooperation with the Global Campaign for Education coalition of international organizations in Vietnam, including ActionAid, Aide et Action, ChildFund, Church World Service, Global Advanced Program, Oxfam Great Britain, UNESCO, UNICEF, Vietnam - Belgium Education Project, World Vision and the local NGO UCNEV.
