VietNamNet Bridge – Students nowadays would rather continue studying at higher levels than look for jobs. There are many reasons for this.

During five years of studying at university, Dung, a former student of the Hanoi Civil Engineering University, lived on the money provided by his parents. Dung never before had to do any work to earn his living.

Therefore, he did not know what to do with the university degree he got last year. Finally, Dung decided to follow a 4-year training course in information technology at Aptech centre.

As such, while Dung’s friends have been moving heaven and earth to look for jobs, Dung still goes to university every day, and continues living on his parents’ money. “I don’t feel self-confident enough to start an independent life. I think I will only be able to become independent in two more years,” Dung said.

Blogs and forums these days are full of entries of students complaining about difficulties finding jobs. Many students write that they feel tense as they have to look for jobs in coming months when they have university degrees. Some students write that they are afraid of becoming adults.

A 4th year student related that he and some other students in the same class felt inferior to others and did not have good communications skills; therefore, they are afraid of becoming independent.

Meanwhile, a lot of students decide to continue studying after finishing university because they chose the wrong study branches.

Mai Anh, a student of the Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema, said that she decided to study at the academy because she liked watching films when she was a child. However, after some years of studying there, she has realised that it would be hard to find a job as a film producer.

“I wonder if I can get a job to earn my living,” Anh said, adding that she has decided to follow another training course so that she can get money from her parents.

Continuing studying to wait for opportunities

As the economy has been facing difficulties, many university graduates tend to continue studying. Pham Hai Yen, graduate of the accountancy faculty of the Hanoi Economics University, who got 560 TOEFL marks, said that she can get a good job now with the degree and her English skills, but she still prefers studying more. “Overseas study will give me a better degree, which can bring a better job,” she said.

Nguyen Thu Phuong, who has graduated from the Journalism and Communication Faculty of the Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities, has decided to spend $1,500 to follow a training course on newspaper design at FPT Arena Centre. Phuong said that it is difficult to get a job in the current economic difficulties; therefore, it would be better for now to keep going to school.

Phuong said that it would not be too late for her to look for a job in a few years when the national economy is better off.
