A lot of workers from industrial zones in Binh Duong province are going to training courses to get retrained while waiting for new job opportunities.

Nguyen Van Hung, a worker in a company in Song Than industrial zone in Binh Duong province, became redundant earlier this year. His company, in an attempt to narrow production, had to lay-off workers.

In fact, many companies are still seeking workers, but Hung’s central region accent has not pleased interviewers, while his working skills remain weak, both of which have kept him unemployed.

Many friends of Hung’s have also been moving heaven and earth to seek jobs in a period when most businesses are trying to cut their labour forces to save money. Only a few of his friends have found jobs.

Not only blue-collar workers, new graduates are also unemployed. N. T. H from Binh Duong province graduated from the Economics University in late 2008 and has been unemployed since. H said that she never makes it through the interview round as she does not have good interview skills and does not have enough work experience.

Dinh Thi Thanh Hoai from the central province of Ha Tinh, a graduate of the Accountancy Faculty of Binh Duong University, has decided to study working skills at free training courses under the APEC project run by the Global Management Laboratory Vietnam (GMLV).

Huynh Thi Ngoc Trinh from Cu Chi district in HCM City related that she has got a job at ISU Milk. Trinh said that after attending a training course under APEC project, she has much more work experience; especially, she better understands about ISO, teamwork skills and investment plans. She is satisfied with her current VND2mil/month salary.

Opportunities should not be missed

According to Nguyen Cao Cuong from GMLV, the organisation has joined forces with the province’s department of labour, war invalids and social affairs to open many training courses for students and workers.

A lot of training courses have been launched under APEC project aiming to provide free training for youths, including in Vinh Phuc, Bac Ninh, Hai Duong and Binh Duong provinces, and in Hanoi.

Experts say that jobs are rare in the economic recession period, and it is now the right time to get additional training.

In fact, a lot of businesses are sending their staffs to retraining courses at this moment, preparing the labour force for the post-crisis period.

Pham Thi Thanh Ha, a lecturer at Megalink Training Company, said that she has many trainees from businesses who have sent staffs to retraining courses.

“The workers’ retraining now is supported by businesses’ leaders. Workers come to training courses in order to get ‘soft’ skills which can help them work better in the future,” Ha said.
