Students always complain about lack of time, but spending most of their time chatting and sleeping – these are the problems of students nowadays, dubbed ‘students diseases’.

At 4 pm every day, university campuses are full of students in groups of five or seven. They are students taking advantage of ‘good weather’ to gather and chit-chat. Anything, from the smallest thing to important business, could be the topics of their discussions.

However, it seems that negative news is more attractive to students: Tuyet, a beauty, acted jealously, or Hao was hit because he gave counterfeit money to a seller.

Nguyet, a gossip addicted, related that she cannot find any passion more attractive than gossip. She related that sometimes she stays late at the university until 7 pm just to chat with friends.

Nguyet said that not only girls, but boys also like chatting, adding that evening is the time when students gather to gossip, and no one goes to the library to study at that time.

Thuy, a third-year student at Hanoi University, said that she feels sad if she does not gossip once a day. She always meets friends on weekends when they stay up late at night to chat about everything.

“We know that it is a waste of time, but we find it hard to give up the habit,” Thuy said.

Relaxing with sleep

If one goes into a dormitory, one can see some students studying, and many students sleeping.

Sleeping proves to consume most of the free time of students. They sleep because they have nothing to do, and because of sleeping, they do not have time to do anything else.

Ng, a student at the University for Social Sciences and Humanities, who lives in Me Tri dormitory, said that most of her roommates sleep after classes.

Ng also said that sometimes her friends skip exams just because they feel they need sleep.

Sleep proves to be the most intoxicating kind of relaxation for students.

Students nodding off in lecture halls is a popular image at many universities. Some students have to sleep during lessons because they spent time playing games the night before.

Associate Prof Dr Nguyen Thi Minh Thai, lecturer of the Journalism Faculty of the Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities, said: “Students are the people who are most ‘thirsty’ for time, but in fact, they are the biggest time wasters.”
