VietNamNet Bridge – Many students study for university entrance exams via the Internet thanks to its convenience. However, the quality of many websites providing online training for exams is poor.

Many teachers say there are many websites of relatively high quality, and thus attract many students, like thaytro.com.vn, hocmai.vn. However, there are also websites which provide inaccurate knowledge, have shallow content and irrelevant lectures. The topics on some websites are overly broad. Meanwhile, most websites do not give detailed instructions for studying for exams.

Nguyen Thi Cuc, a literature teacher at Truong Chinh High School in district 12, HCM City, said that she saw sample articles of unknown authors on a website which provide students with ‘backward’ knowledge.

Explaining why she called the knowledge ‘backward’, Cuc said that some of lessons and information have been removed from curriculums by the Ministry of Education and Training in an effort to ease the burden on high school students.

She said that it would be better for students to thoroughly study the knowledge they receive at high school, and consult their teachers if they really want to study for exams with online training services.

Pham Hong Danh, Director of the Vinh Vien Exam Preparation Centre, said that not every training website is reliable. One can see that the knowledge provided by websites is similar because the administrators simply copy and paste the information they get from other websites.

“And of course, no website documents sources of information,” Danh said.

Real money, virtual knowledge

It is estimated that there are some 20 websites providing online training programmes to help students prepare for university entrance exams.

Some of the websites are free, but most require students to buy cards at 50,000-100,000/card.

Most of the websites have impressive advertisement slogans. www.onthi.com, for example, says it offers the best way of studying in the digital age. Some other websites say that they have exam questions provided by the Ministry of Education and Training.

Meanwhile, Dr Nguyen An Ninh, Head of the Examination and Education Quality Accreditation Department under the Ministry of Education and Training, affirmed that the ministry has not officially cooperated with any such website.

Ninh also said that there are no regulations on the management of the quality of websites providing online training services. He said that the websites just should be used for reference.
