LookAtVietnam – Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has assigned the Ministry of Construction to create a special zoning plan for universities and colleges to 2025 with a vision to 2050.

Students study industrial electricity at Nhan Dao Vocational Training College, District 3, HCM City.

The zone encompasses HCM City as well as the provinces of Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Binh Phuoc, Tay Ninh, Long An and Tien Giang.

The plan aims to reduce the density of students and the number of universities and colleges in urban areas by setting up university clusters and areas.

The ministry will map out a list of universities in urban areas that need to be moved to suburban areas, particularly those that need to be renovated or rebuilt.

Over the next nine months, the ministry will conduct evaluations and propose criteria for relocating existing universities and setting up new university areas.

The ministry will propose locations and scales of universities and science research institutes that meet the national, regional and international standards.

By 2015, the HCM City zone would have an estimated 700,000-800,000 university and college students, and the total land would cover 4,5000-9,000 ha.

By 2025, the number of students in the zone is expected to increase to 1.1-1.2 million and the total land area to 7,000-15,000 ha.

Local universities would have from 35,000 to 120,000 students, with the minimum land area for each student 65 square metres.
