More and more students, seemingly conscious of their capability, are deciding to attend vocational school to learn a trade rather than trying to study at university at any cost.

Failing his high school final exam two times, Tuan Minh in district 4 of HCM City decided not to continue studying anymore. After a period of staying idle, Minh got a job as a waiter at a restaurant. With the sum of money he earned from the job, he registered to follow a class on network management at a computer centre.

“As I had a mania for online games, I could not concentrate on learning and I failed my exams. And I have decided to restart also with a computer,” Minh said.

Anh Quoc, 28, the owner of a mobile phone repair shop on Nguyen Kiem street, said that he decided not to attend university because he well knew that his learning capability will not bring him through the university entrance exams. “Even if I had passed the entrance exams, I would not have been able to pursue my studies because we were very poor,” he said.

Quoc related that he got a job right after he followed a 6-month training course on repairing mobile phones. Three years later, with his savings, he set up a shop of his own.

Phan, a student, who is following a class on repairing hardware at iSPACE vocational college, said that he is satisfied with his decision to go to the school. He said that trainees just have to follow short-term training courses to learn careers. Meanwhile, they can return and learn more at any time.

“I’m not afraid of being jobless after I finish the training course. It is now the age of mobile phones booming,” he said.

Nguyen Van Tuan, teacher of a mobile phone training centre on Quang Trung Road in Go Vap district, said that his centre is overloaded. “We have not only domestic trainees, but trainees from Cambodia as well,” he said, adding that he can introduce jobs to trainees after they finish training here.

Nguyen Van Thanh, Head of the Training Division of iSPACE, said that some 30-40 percent of graduates can meet the requirements to work for enterprises, while the others can work for other production workshops.
