Nguyen Trong Hoang said 18,000 voluntary students would have been on duty at bus and train stations and universities and colleges since June 8 to assist the university candidates.

There are 15,323 lodgings, 3,247 of them free, and they are looking for another 17,000 places, including 2,000 free ones, according to Hoang.

Others are also pitching in to help. The HCM City National University’s Dormitory Management Centre has offered lodging for 3,000 candidates sitting for exams in Thu Duc district.

Tran Thanh An, its director, said the rent would be a mere VND10,000-20,000 a day.

The Centre also has nurses and doctors on duty all 24 hours to assist them.

The HCM City Agriculture and Forestry University has 2,000 lodgings at an even cheaper VND5,000.

Huynh Thanh Hung, the university vice principal, said nobody taking the exams at nearby venues would have to worry about accommodation.

The HCM City University of Transport said candidates facing difficulties in finding accommodation could contact its dormitory.

Furthermore, its Students’ Association has set up a volunteers team on motorbikes to show candidates staying at the dormitory their exam centres.

Samaritan history

Do Duc Can of District 1, who has provided free accommodation to candidates for the last 10 years, said helping them with board and lodging brought him “joy”.

Cao Thi Oanh of HCM City’s Go Vap district has volunteered for the “Exam Season Assistance” programme for last three years, and asks her neighbours to take in candidates. Last year, they took in 140 people, she said.

Le Nguyen Thanh Trung, a candidate from northern Quang Ninh province, said it was his first time in the city and had come alone but did not feel worried since the volunteers had helped him get free meals and accommodation near his exam centre.
