While universities have been trying to expand study branches and increase numbers of students every year, they have not paid appropriate attention to developing material facilities, to the ire of students.

Saigon University has three bases

Universities with five or seven campuses are regularly seen in HCM City. Besides the headquarters, universities like Hong Bang University have more than 10 bases, Open University five, and Saigon University three. As universities’ chief campuses are not large enough for all students, they have to hire different places to set up classrooms.

Learning at one place, taking exams at others

A lot of students of Hong Bang University have to go to Dien Bien Phu street in the morning and then to classrooms in Go Vap district in the afternoon. The long distance between the two university campuses has prompted many students to be truant in the afternoon.

B.A, a student of Hong Bang University, said that students cannot keep their minds on their studies because they are always worried that they may have to move to other accommodations. Students from other provinces who are living in rented rooms always want to find rooms near their universities to save money on travelling expenses. However, they do not know where they should live because they are not sure about where they will have to study.

Many students are lucky enough to be able to study in a single location. However, they often have to go to different sites to take exams. H.D, a first-year student of Open University, complained that he had to go to An Duong Vuong for classes but Doan Van Bo road in district 4 to take exams. It is not strange thing to hear of students getting lost on their way to exams.

The dream library

Students have also complained about poor material facilities. The second base of the Saigon University at No 28 Nguyen Thong in district 3 is now a place for students of three faculties: business administration, accounting and finance & banking. There are three buildings here with only one ground floor and first floor for classrooms, while the two above floors are dormitories with clothes hung on the balcony. The school yard there is also the parking lot.

However, the biggest problem students are facing is the lack of libraries. Students have to go to the headquarters on An Duong Vuong road in district 5 to borrow books and documents from the library there.

T.T, a student of Hong Bang University, said that she does not mind travelling a long distance to class, but she is tired of having no library.

A student of the same university, who is studying at No 89 Nguyen Dinh Chieu in Phu Nhuan district, showed us a row of rooms and said: “Teachers said this is the library and students can come here to borrow documents. However, the library is always closed.”

A student of the Saigon University said sadly: “We wish we could have a library, but this is just a dream.”
