Students who have gone to big cities to take exam preparation classes have been facing a lot of problems. Amid the sweltering summer heat, many have given up the game and returned to their home villages.

Hong, a student from Ninh Binh province, related that she arrived in Hanoi on June 7 but still hasn’t been able to find a room to rent. She is currently sharing a 10 sq m room with three others and does not have a private corner to study.

For more than one week, Hong has wandered Ta Quang Buu, Le Thanh Nghi and other streets to look for a room to rent. Livable rooms are too expensive, while cheap rooms are unlivable.

“I arrived in Hanoi to prepare for my university entrance exams. However, I have attended only three lessons so far, because I have spent so much time looking for a room,” Hong said.

“It is so hot here, while the electricity is cut regularly. I have wasted half of the time I have to prepare for exams,” she said.

Hong said she is gettting ready to go home.

Nguyen Huu Manh from Hung Yen province is luckier than Hong because he has a relative who lives near the Hanoi University of Education’s exam preparation centre. However, he also said he plans to cut short his exam preparations.

Manh’s schedule has worn him out. He has two shifts in the morning, from 7.30 am to 11.30 am, while he has three learning shifts in the afternoon.

“I purchased tickets to attend all 60 shifts at 930,000 dong. However, I have become exhausted in just five days,” he said.

Giang, a student from Thanh Hoa province who lived in a rented room on Nguyen Phong Sac street in Hanoi, reportedly fainted while she was studying one night. Giang’s parents had to come take her back home.

Kim, a student from Yen Bai who lives in the same boarding house, was not surprised when hearing the news. Every day, students have to walk from the boarding house to the exam preparation centre. Students have to learn hard in daytime at the centres, and then stay up late at night to study. Kim said that he regretted having come to Hanoi.

Exam preparation centres in Hanoi, which were so busy earlier this month, have become quieter now as a lot of students have returned to their home villages.

T, an officer at an exam preparation centre on Ta Quang Buu street, related that the mathematics class was opened with 70 trainees, while the number has dropped to 50. She said even students who paid in advance for the whole training course have given up classes.
