As the university entrance exams will come in just two weeks, examinees are running top speed to prepare for exams.

Learning in the park

The north and central regions of Vietnam are witnessing the hottest summer days of the year. However, exam preparation centres prove to be even hotter.

Vinh city in the central region these days seems to be more crowded as it has received a lot of examinees from neighbouring provinces, who have arrived to take exam preparation classes.

Le Quoc Han Exam Preparation Centre opens at 6 am every day in the morning and only closes at 9 pm at night. Students have to pay 12,000 dong per every 2-hour lesson and struggle with heat and the lack of light inside classrooms. However, they still go to classes everyday, because they want to pass their exams.

Nguyen Thu Trang from Nghe An province related that she spends 80,000 dong a day for classes and meals, equal to the spending of her family for one week.

Trang and other students not only have to pay for tuition fees and meals, but also for rented rooms and other services. The leasing fee for a small room near exam preparation centres is hovering around 400-500,000 dong per month, while meals have become 2,000-,3000 dong more expensive.

Kim Oanh from Nghe An province related that her parents gave her 2 million dong before she left for Vinh city, while tuition fees alone cost nearly 1 million dong. In order to save money, she has to hire a room 6 kilometres from the exam preparation centre, where she has to struggle with the summer heat every day to keep learning.

Preparing for exams by clicking mouse

A lot of students in Da Nang city are not going to exam preparation centres; they are trying to prepare themselves for exams by accessing websites, or … going to the park.

Nguyen Thuy, a student of Le Quy Don High School, said that it is better for her to stay at home to review for exams herself. “I access websites that specialise in training students for exams. This proves to be a very effective way of learning,” she said.

“There are several thousand exercises on onthi.com provided by qualified lecturers from well-known universities and schools,” said Tran Van Trung from Phan Chu Trinh High School.

Students in Hue city city also think that online exam preparation websites are better than exam preparation centres.

That explains why many exam preparation centres in the city are not crowded this summer.

Nhung, an enrolment officer of the exam preparation centre on Phan Dinh Phung street, complained that though tuition fees remain the same as last year at 100,000 dong, there are fewer students this year.

More and more students tend to choose online exam preparation websites, namely truongtructuyen.vn, thay tro.vn and abcdonline.vn. Students have to pay 50,000 dong only to purchase a card to access the websites, while they can control when they want to learn.

Meanwhile, the park on Le Loi street and libraries these days are full of students, who come to seek quiet seats for learning and avoiding the summer heat.
