Linh, 32, who lives in Tay Ho district in Hanoi, related that one time when she went to attend a parents’ meeting, she received 15 leaflets advertising summer classes for children.

Parents nowadays like sending their children dancing class

Knowing full well that parents do not have time to take care of children in the summer holiday, education centres have been trying to persuade busy parents to bring their children to summer classes by offering attractive conditions and discounts of up to 50 percent on tuition fees.

Colourful leaflets with attractive slogans like ‘discovering novel things’, ‘developing brains in the most effective way’ were dumped on parents at kindergartens and high schools in the last days of May when they went to attend parents’ meetings at the end of the school year.

Linh related that there were ‘armies’ of leaflet deliverers standing in front of school entrance ways and class doors advertising classes in all subjects.

“Advertisement leaflets were even delivered together with the papers on students’ learning results,” Linh said.

There are many choices for students this summer. They can attend English, music and dance classes. They can also go to martial art clubs and art classes. Advertisement leaflets are not only delivered at schools, but also at offices and public parking areas. Leaflets are sent through door chinks, or put in motorbike baskets.

“I get a lot of leaflets inviting my child to attend classes where many subjects are taught. However, I don’t know which classes to choose because I’m not sure about the teaching quality of the classes,” said Hoa, whose daughter is a Kim Lien Secondary School student.

Huyen, 4th grade student, who lives at Nam Dong residential quarter, related that she was busy all the time during the school year with a busy schedule. However, she cannot relax this summer, because her mother wants her to go to English class.

Huyen’s mother related that last year she sent her child to an English centre which said it had native English speakers. However, she later found out that the teachers were Vietnamese students of foreign language colleges.

Besides English classes, parents nowadays like sending their children to sports clubs or entertainment classes like dancing, martial arts or music ones.

“I want my children to relax in summer, therefore, I plan to send them to dance or music classes, which can help them relax and get more knowledge at the same time,” said Huong, 42.

Meanwhile, many students complain that they have to study too much in the summer.

“I wish I could play games instead of learning English,” Huyen said.
