LookAtVietnam – Thousands of answer papers are to be re-marked a week after high school exams finished, an education official said.

Students sit for literature exams in HCM City. All answer papers that were not filled out according to exam regulations will be marked again.

Papers that were not filled in according to exam regulations would be remarked or not marked at all, said Tran Van Nghia, vice director of the Department of Examination and Education Quality Accreditation.

Examiners were urged to re-mark the test papers via an urgent official document sent to departments of education and training nationwide by the Ministry of Education and Training.

According to the document, all papers where a substantial number of graphs were filled in using pencil would be marked again, as would papers that had to be marked by two examiners. Answers filled in using coloured pen would not be marked.

Examining boards have to assess violations of examination regulations and send their evaluation documents to the education ministry.

The exams are structured to include a compulsory section for every student across the country and optional sections for different curricula taught in different schools. Earlier the ministry said any student who filled in two of these optional sections would not receive grades for them both. However, the ministry recently issued an instruction saying these answers would still be marked.

However, this is the first year that this method is applied, the ministry has considered and issued a latest instruction, which stated that these answer exams would still be marked.

This is the first year the ministry has introduced a marking system including a 0.25 grade. This mark applies in the writing section, where essays have to be marked by two examiners. If the difference between the examiners marks is 2 or above, the answers will be marked by a third examiner.

The final mark will be taken from the two grades that are closest together.

If the difference is more than three marks, a group of examiners will assess the answers.

The ministry urged examiners to be flexible when marking papers on literature.

The marking system is designed so teachers from one province will mark papers from another province.

After exam results are published, students who want to appeal their grades have to submit a complaint within 10 days.

Answer papers eligible for appeal must have grades lower than the student’s average in that subject in grade 12 from 2 marks or above.
