The university entrance exams will take place in some 20 days. Meanwhile, a lot of universities still do not have enough rooms to rent for exams.

The Hanoi University of Industry has received 56,000 applications to take exams to get into the university, or 22,000 more than last year. Pham Van Bong, Head of the Training Division under the university, said that it has to arrange 32 exam places with 1,066 exam rooms. It will need 2,000 exam proctors; therefore, it will have to hire 1,000 more teachers for the exams.

The Hanoi Agriculture University NO 1 has also said that it has been busy over the last month seeking rooms to rent. The university has received 45,758 applications for its entrance exams, which has forced it to lease rooms in districts from Long Bien and Gia Lam in Hanoi to My Hao district in Hung Yen province.

The HCM City University of Technical Education complained that room leasing fees have increased sharply. “We had to pay 100,000 for every room last year, while we have been asked for 120,000 this year,” said Nguyen Tien Dung, Head of the Training Division under the university.

The HCM City Banking University has seen the number of applications down by a half in comparison with last year, but leasing exam rooms remains a problem. Le Tan Phat, Deputy President of the university, said that his university even has to lease rooms at primary and secondary schools because of the room shortage.

“It is estimated that we will have incur the loss of 400 million dong this year for organising exams,” Phat said.

High percentage of virtual applications

Enrolment experts have estimated that the number of virtual applications will be some 20-30 percent of the total applications (Under the current regulations students have the right to submit more than one registration to take exams at universities).

Bong from Hanoi University said that the number of registrations to the university is much higher than last year, 22,000 registrations, while the university will enroll 6,660 students only. Bong said that last year, 64 percent of registered students attended exams to enter the university.

Nguyen Ngoc Long, Head of the Training Division under the University of Transport, said that the high percentage of virtual applications will create big difficulties for universities.

“As we have 21,232 applications, we have to arrange 21 places for exams. Besides the exam rooms in Hanoi, we also have 60 exam rooms in Vinh city in Nghe An province, 49 rooms in Quy Nhon city. Meanwhile, only 60 percent of registered students attended last year’s exams,” he said.

Though the number of registrations to enter Hanoi Open University is 4,000 than last year, the university predicts that 30 percent of the registrations are ‘virtual’. The HCM City Economics University has received 35,000 registrations this year, up by 6,000 over last year.
