VietNamNet Bridge – A recent survey shows that forty-one percent of polled students said that they do not think they need to be high-minded, and that in some cases, noble-mindedness is synonymous with ‘blindness’.

Psychology Doctor Huynh Van Son

The survey, of 874 students from universities in HCM City, found that 41 percent of students do not aspire to be noble in thought and behaviour.

Psychology Doctor Huynh Van Son from the HCM City University of Education, the author of the survey, said that the survey was conducted on students from different universities in HCM City; therefore, it shows reliable results, though HCM City students do not represent students throughout the whole country.

According to Son, the survey’s result shows that students have received inadequate education about living values and living skills. Moreover, Son said that many students have been negatively influenced by modern society and its materialistic values and become egoists.

Thirty-six percent of polled students think that living and working honestly will put people at a disadvantage in comparison with other people, while 28 percent of students said they have thought of revenge. 32 percent of students accept ungratefulness, and do not think that this is a kind of immorality.

Son also said that a lot of families have not paid enough attention to educating their children in ethics. Meanwhile, community education programmes on respecting cultural beauty have not got enough attention.

According to Son, his study has been highly applauded by the scientific council. Students will be the owners of society in the future. They will behave in the future the way they look at life today.

Le Thi Thanh Huyen, Student of the HCM City University of Social Sciences and Humanities:

In fact, ‘noble-minded’ has a broad meaning. It is difficult to say whether I have lived as noble-minded person. I just think that I need to live with my true self. It is not easy to find a noble person nowadays.

Ha Huyen, officer in Binh Thanh district in HCM City:

I’m living and behaving according to my conscience. I only do the things I believe I need to do.

My friends are egoists; they just live for themselves, while they don’t think they need to do something for others. I think that the word ‘noble-minded’ is disappearing.

Nguyen Tuan, war veteran in Thu Duc district: It is really difficult now to find a high-minded person among the youth. The modern society has partially prompted people to become pragmatic. In the past, people could easily share balls of rice and bulbs of sweet potatoes, while young people do not do that nowadays.
