LookAtVietnam – About 640,000 university applicants nationwide took part in the first university entrance exam yesterday, July 5, an increase of 1 per cent over last year, according to the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET).

Those candidates took part in the entrance exams for A group (Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry), and V group (Literature and Drawing) that was organised by MoET and 93 universities.

In the two-day examination administered at 1,002 locations, 105 candidates were accused of exam violations. There were 84 cases of students disqualified from taking the test. Most of the violations included bringing cell phones and other documents into exam rooms or arriving late, said MoET’s deputy minister Pham Vu Luan.

There were also 11 supervising staff, who faced consequences for violations, including six cases of being removed from their supervisory roles.

Nguyen Hai Nam, a traffic policeman in Ha Noi’s Ba Dinh district, said that although it rained yesterday in Ha Noi, student volunteers and local authorities controlled the traffic well to ensure candidates would not be stuck in traffic jams on their way to examinations.

Ha Noi had worked to reduce traffic congestion at 40 traffic hot spots this year, which contributed to better traffic flow especially in areas with many universities and schools such as in Xa Dan, Chua Boc and Gieng Me, said Nam.

Nguyen Duc Nghia, deputy director of National University in HCM City said two candidates, who were suspected to be infected with A/H1N1, were put into separate rooms to take their exams.

Due to a lack of facilities, many universities had to hold testing in primary schools, which have smaller desks and chairs, or at schools as much as 10km from the city centre, Luan said.

After the last test is administered, MoET will announce the answers for all the tests, as well as the scores and rating on the official website www.moet.gov.vn. It is hoped by providing the official answers, candidates and their parents will not buy the unofficial answers from others which may contain the wrong answers.

The panel will make sure students will have their results in a timely fashion, said an official from the ministry.

The ministry initially judged the first examination as a success. The next exams are for B (Maths, Chemistry and Biology), C (Literature, History and Geography), D (Maths, Literature and Foreign Language) groups and will be held on July 9 and 10.
