LookAtVietnam – At many schools in big urban areas, protecting themselves against the flu is the first lesson teachers are giving to their students.

Thanh Binh People Founded High School in HCM City has just purchased a temperature measuring machine worth 680 million dong. It plans to take students’ temperatures every day. All parents, teachers and officers of the schools must pass a thorough health examination before they gather for the new school year on August 17.

As the school has more than 3,500 students, it has had to recruit three more physicians, two nurses to remain on duty 24/24 to deal with emergency cases.

At other primary and secondary schools in HCM City, preventing the flu epidemic is now the hot topic in all teachers’ conferences and parents’ meetings. At Kim Dong Primary School in Go Vap district, parents have been asked to cooperate with the school to protect students and prevent the flu epidemic. Antiseptic soaps have been provided for students’ and teachers’ use before they go to lessons.

HCM City: boarding students kept ‘in detention’

The Thai Binh private-run high school began the new school year on August 16. All the boarding students of the schools had to take a health examination before entering the school, while they will be ‘kept in detention’, i.e. they will not be allowed to go out for one month in order to prevent the flu epidemic from spreading. The school has also provided protective masks for students and asked parents to wear masks before they enter the school’s campus.

Hanoi: the first lesson is one on fighting flu

Nearly 1.4 million students in Hanoi begin the new school year today, August 17. Prior to that, more than 2,400 schools in the city had meetings to check preparation works for the new school year. They discussed measures to prevent the flu epidemic and to deal with an epidemic if it broke out.

The city’s education and health care departments have asked schools to pay special attention to two issues: cleaning the school environment and heightening the awareness of students about fighting the flu. On the first day of the new school year, teachers have to gather students to talk about measures to fight flu.

Head of Hai Ba Trung district’s Education Sub-department Lan Duyen said that a meeting was held in which teachers and health-care agency representatives met and discussed what to do in detailed cases, when teachers need to close schools and when they need to set up hospitals right at schools.
